Mary’s Day
Every December 8 in the Philippines (and anywhere in the world where Catholicism is predominant) is the Feast of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Philippines (being a dominantly Catholic country) consider Mary, the mother of Jesus, its Patroness.
For the Catholic Filipinos, this day is a Holy Day of Obligation. There are only two such solemnities ordained by the Catholic Church. The other one is Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ.
Today it falls on a weekday but most churches conduct a special mass at noon time so that people can attend without disrupting their work schedule.
The town of Los Baños, Laguna (where I am based) celebrates its town fiesta in honor of Mary’s Immaculate Conception.
