Filipino New Year with A Bang
Filipinos do greet the New Year with a big BANG. Influenced by our Chinese brothers, we do believe that fireworks (and tremendous noise) will sure drive the bad spirits away. Well, who wouldn’t want a fresh start every year? A year with all the good, bright and beautiful; to get just that I guess anybody would agree to dance stark naked under the moon if that will start the year right.
I’m scared of anything that explodes. In my 32 years, I haven’t touched a firecracker much less light one. But I admire firework displays as long as they’re some significant distance away from me and I only get to watch at some visible skyline. New Year’s Eve terrifies me unceasingly. Each and every year I am like a cowering dog in a safe corner with its tail between the hind legs and front paws covering the ears. I hate the blasting and exploding firecrackers that Filipinos tend to overdo when celebrating New Year.
Whatever the circumstances, nothing beats being with family during the holidays.
Whew. Now I’m back to my real world.
Well, I at least have my full body parts intact and thankfully the neighbors went easy on the “explosives” and didn’t get our house burned down.
Happy 2006 to all!
