Philippine Eagle on Mt. Everest
WOW. What can I say?! YOOHOO! AWESOME! It’s PHENOMENAL!
The Philippine eagle has landed -
was the first message relayed by Leo Oracion, a Filipino mountaineer who conquered Mt. Everest in the first ever Philippine expedition.
In a country where no mountain reaches 3,000 meters and the only ice is inside freezers, Oracion, his teammate Erwin Emata and rival climber Romeo Garduce were hailed as heroes as they labored up the southern slope of the 8,848-meter (29,028-foot) mountain.
Now this is a cause for celebration. This is a moment when being a Filipino makes one proud. Inspiration. In the middle of the charter change debate, the recent hurricane, the plunging economy, and controversies everywhere, this is something that lifts our spirits up.
It’s a reminder that “Filipinos can”. A testament to our resolve.
Today, we celebrate as a nation. Tonight we will sleep well. Tomorrow we can face the world again, reminded that we can be conquerors too.
