The Philippine Eagle

moneaglelogo

The Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) is one of the biggest and most powerful forest-dwelling birds in the world. The beauty of this bird is just beyond description. Unfortunately, it is also among the rarest and most critically endangered vertebrate species. It is found only in the Philippines, in the islands of Luzon, Samar, Leyte and Mindanao.

Philippine eagle 1There are now only a few hundred of these birds living in the wild. The Philippine Eagle Foundation, a private, non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of the species, has been working both on propagating the birds and preserving their habitat. It is a reflection of the foundation’s hard work that captive breeding experiments have been successfully conducted in their Philipine Eagle Center for many years now.

I remember when the first captive-bred Philippine Eagle was born in 1992. The entire country and bird lovers the world over celebrated that day. That bird, aptly named Pag-asa (“hope”), just recently had its 14th birthday. Pag-asa’s birth was indeed a moment of hope for the eagle population. Since then, 15 other birds have been bred, including Pagkakaisa (“unity”), Pag-asa’s sibling.

Here are some more photos for you to marvel at:

It is my hope that one day, this most magnificent of birds would again be able to live and thrive in its forest home. Its conservation is a benchmark for the preservation of other endangered species in the Philippines and elsewhere. The scientific name of the genus suggests this eagle oreys on man as well. Have many incidents happened where children were taken as prey by the Philipine Eagle.

I’ve never heard of an incident where children have been taken. The name is actually derived from “monkey-eating eagle”, which was the first common name of the Philippine eagle.

I think there’s one reported incident about a subanon child was taken by the eagle at the back of his mother in the 70’s. I’ve read it in one forum, FilipinoForum.net/Nature and I guess they are capable of lifting heavy preycoz’ it has the largest wing surface area among all specie of eagles. Even taken and carries-off a 14 kg small cervus deer in 1985 at a nest studied by Robert S. Kennedy- the well known authority with regards to Philippine eagle.

I think the harpy eagle would be capable of beating Philippine Eagle because The Harpy Eagle is the largest eagle. Females can be over 110 cms long, and the largest was about 12 kgs in weight (as with most raptors, females are larger than males).
No other species of eagle would be a good match for a Harpy Eagle, with the possible exception of the Philippine Eagle, which is somewhat similar in both size and behaviour (both being adapted to hunt monkeys).

The largest eagle that ever lived was the Haast Eagle, or Harpagornis, which lived in New Zealand a few thousand years ago. This eagle weighed about 15 kgs and had a wingspan of three meters. (It should be noted that both Harpy eagles and Harpagornis have very short wingspans for their body size and weight. This is because they evolved to hunt in forested habitats).

The world’s Largest living eagle is the Steller’s sea eagle on avegare it weighs 15-20 lb and could reach up to 28 lb with full belly…Harpy eagle weighs 14-18 lb the 12 kg you’re talking about is a captive bird named ‘jezebel’ and cannot represent the true weight of the Harpy in its natural condition. it’s well fed doesn’t have the opputunity to catch its own prey or even fly from tree to tree meaning It’s an overweight eagle!
The Philippine eagle is the world’s largest eagle in terms of Physical dimensions, stands a meter tall, females lenght 95-112 cm, largest wing area, longest legs & claws 145-150 mm compares to Harpy’s 121-125 mm. Beak almost triple the size of Harpy’s beak. Like the Harpagornis, Philippine eagle is also a forest eagle and both are the TOP predator of the ecosystem they live in.

These are the three largest living eagles in the world.

Philippine eagle-Largest in size or dimensions

Steller’s sea eagle-Largest in weight or Heaviest

Harpy eagle-Largest in bulk or body mass

The most powerful eagles- a toss between the Harpy and Philippine eagles.

-Harpy has a thick legs and longer hind talons while the Philippine eagle has the longest tarsus (legs) and claws it can almost encircles a human neck and also has the broadest wings capable of more powerful lift.

On a recent trip to Mt Apo, in the Philippines I had an opportunity to visit the bird sanctuary of the Philippine Eagle. It is located on one of the highest mountains in the Philippines just outside of Davao City. Nestled in this picturesque setting are other eagles, monkeys, deer, and one crocodile. A nice side trip if anyone traavels to the Philippines. I am surprised by the number of residents how few people have ever seen their native Eagle. Many people in the Philippines are aware of the eagle, but have never seen the bird. After 5 trips to the Philippines I am glad that I was able to visit and see the magnificant philippine eagle.
