25 years: The music and magic of Kuh

25 years: The music and magic of Kuh

KUH LEDESMA is celebrating twenty five years as as a solo performer.
Considered as the country’s pop diva, Kuh has proven that she is one of the most enchanting (and enduring) singers in the industry. Her singing style evolves through the years, from the time she backed up the “Music and Magic” band, her signature song “Dito Ba?”, the ethnic repertoire in AKO AY PILIPINO (1982) and countless pop ballads and arrangements she’s rendered.
Her most recent US tour showcased her versatility as a singer, performing with contemporaries Basil Valdez and Christopher de Leon, and then also with promising singers like Christian …read more

Basketball is not for Filipinos?!

Basketball is not for Filipinos?!

As retired Col. Julian Malonso, a former Philippine Olympic Committee president, said: “Basketball is not the sport for the Filipinos because height counts much. We should concentrate more on football mainly because the ball is on the ground.”

Ooooh. OUCH!
This comment is actually shared and written at length by Manolo Iñigo of the Inquirer in his July 18 article where he says our lack of height takes away our edge in the international basketball tournaments.
Iñigo writes that we should concentrate on golf, chess, bowling, tennis, boxing, billiards and other sports where Filipinos have received international acclaim. At least that’s what Manolo …read more

The Kabayaos, part 2: A family of musical genuises

The Kabayaos, part 2: A family of musical genuises

I’ve always liked classical music. I don’t care much for the conciertos, majors in key and what-nots, but I love experiencing the classics. It’s like having the Master’s Touch invade the rest of my soul, to bring healing and inspiration. That’s how I felt when I heard the Kabayao family perform, they bring life to the melody of a classical piece.
The father, Gilopez Kabayao is the grandson of Philippine musician and composer Gil Lopez, and along with his siblings were exposed to classical music at a very young age. At age 20, dad Gilopez was celebrated as “among the finest …read more

Filipinos Doing Well in Billiards Championship

Filipinos Doing Well in Billiards Championship

The International Pool Tour (IPT) 8-Ball Championship is going on right now in Las Vegas, Nevada. It started on July 22, and will end on July 30, at the Venetian. And apparently the current competition has the biggest purse so far in the IPT’s history (the grand prize is $350,000).
The Filipino contenders, led by last year’s “King of the Hill” champion Efren “Bata” Reyes, are having a strong showing. Nine players have reached Round 4, which was scheduled today.
I remember watching Bata on San Miguel Beer commercials years ago. It’s unbelievable what he can do with a cue. And I …read more

Gloria Arroyo sick with the flu

Gloria Arroyo sick with the flu

I wonder if President Gloria Arroyo read yesterday’s post… or if her Presidential Security Group’s medical officer did. Maybe she should have.
Late last night, President Gloria was rushed to St. Luke’s Medical Center because of… guess what… THE FLU. fever. runny nose. sore throat. dry cough. body ache. Yup. All classic symptoms of the common flu.

The bulletin, read by Presidential Chief of Staff Michael Defensor, said Arroyo’s symptoms “are consistent with the flu” and that she was “advised by her doctors,” including pulmonologist Ruth Divinagracia, “to get full rest.”
It also advised that she have “no visitors please.”

No visitors… Like we …read more

The Kabayao legacy: Meeting the spirit through music

The Kabayao legacy: Meeting the spirit through music

A few years back, we had a rare kind of church service. Instead of the usual experience of worshiping God through our songs, gifts, and a preaching, my growing church in Baltimore was witness to God’s splendor and greatness when a Mr. Gilopez Kabayao and his family shared their passion of music and their love of God. For two hours they serenaded us with the most enchanting classical renditions of masterpieces. A father, mother and three children are all musical geniuses who dedicate their music to the Creator who made us.
Now seventy-seven years old, Gilopez still tours the world with …read more

Preparing for a pandemic flu

Preparing for a pandemic flu

I write for another b5media blog, the FLU PATROL, where I relate world news and information about the flu – seasonal, avian/bird, and pandemic. More importantly, Flu Patrol was created to arm the public with as much awareness and preparedness as possible. As with other parts of my life, I believe there’s no need to panic, but we do need to prepare.
We have to deal with the seasonal influenza every year and the key to preparing for it is simple – vaccinations and cleanliness i.e., washing hands, cover when sneezing, staying home when sick. The bird flu virus is highly …read more
