Manila’s Litter Wardens

Thousands of college students patrol Manila’s streets looking for litter and busted street lights. Seem a little far-fetched to you? Well, these students are the newly-inducted Litter Wardens. They are volunteers from the Unibersidad de Manila (UdM) who will lend a hand as environmental patrol officers.

“They will serve as the city government’s watchdog,” (Manila Mayor Lito) Atienza said.

Among other things, the litter wardens will report on the status and development of the city’s various service areas, including streetlights; cleanliness of streets and waterways, obstruction, illegal parking; and peace and order.

On weekends, Masuda said the litter wardens would participate in the cleaning of Baywalk…

Yay for Manila, and for the students who are now taking active roles in keeping their city clean and orderly!
