Quick Links for Today

Here are some news items that I think are worthy of attention today:

Peso hits 4-year high, breaks P50-to-$1. Last I looked, the exchange rate was near P56 to $1. Do you think this new rate will hold for long?

The Peso on Monday broke into the 49-level against the US dollar for the first time in over four years on upbeat economic prospects and big inflows of remittances from overseas Filipino workers after Typhoon “Milenyo” disrupted trading for two days last week.

Bucking a regional downturn, the peso breached the P50-to-$1 barrier, hitting 49.50 before closing at 50.01 to the dollar.

Manila councilor seeks ban on billboards. This is an offshoot of the catastrophic fall of giant billboards in Manila, due to the recent typhoon. Those billboards have become an eyesore and now, agents of death and misfortune. It took the typhoon for possible guidelines to be discussed.

Councilor Ma. Lourdes “Bonjay” Isip-Garcia, who authored the resolution, said the moratorium will be in effect until the city government drafts an ordinance setting guidelines for advertising firms who want to put up billboards in Manila.

“Some of these advertising signs and billboards have become sources of distraction for motorists, sometimes causing traffic and even road accidents,” Garcia said.

Mayor Lito Atienza, who is against imposing a total ban on outdoor advertisements, had earlier said that the city government would just enforce a single standard for all billboards.

Philippine President confers awards on billiards champions. Bata Reyes is honored, along with Francisco Bustamante. They already hold special places in the hearts of Pinoys everywhere. This just makes it official.

Filipino billiards champions Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante received special honors from Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Monday for their achievements in the game.

Reyes received the Order of Lakandula with the rank Champion for Life while Bustamante received the presidential medal of merit.

    Hi, Grace.

Got wind of your distinctly pinoy blog through numerous links I cannot now remember! Anyway, I think your blog is cool. I have only recently discovered the joys and the challenges(mainly technical) of having a blog. Well the thing is, I have a a month-old blog with no traffic! I was hoping that it’s okay for an established blog such as filipina soul to accept a link from a newbie nobody such as myself. May I be included in your links?

Having written that, thanks in advance. Keep up excellent work on blogging the pinoy experience!

    Kapwa pinay,

    Maria Sheila Chou

Hi Mel, yes, we’re hopeful that the economy of the Philippines is on its way up and the exchange rate will show it.

    Hi Maria Sheila,
Thanks for stopping by! As co-author of this blog, I’m taking the liberty to answer your query. While we’re not in the habit of giving away links here at Filipina Soul, we do like pointing our readers to other blogs that we find interesting. So, do keep posting at your blog. If you have a post or article that you think our readers would enjoy, send us an email and we’ll take a look at it. Take care!
