Rating our Nursing Schools
I’m a little skeptical about this, but I’ll let you take your vote…
Here’s the scoop via Sunstar Manila: The Commision on Higher Education will be publishing a list of nursing schools based on their performance, in terms of student board passers. Supposedly this will guide students on what schools are good places for a nursing major. Some of the schools have a rate of “zero” passing and Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye was quoted as saying that such schools are “very worrisome because if you have these types of institutions, well you can see the quality of the education being parted.”
It seems that currently there are some 460 nursing programs offered nationwide, and quality of education is becoming a real issue, especially in light of the recent cheating/leak in the last Nursing Board Exam.
On one hand, this is a great idea because it will help guide students onto well-performing schools. There is a dire need to improve our quality of collegiate education, and not just in the nursing program too.
On the other hand, what do you do about those currently enrolled in the low-scoring schools? Will the school’s over all performance affect how these students are later hired? There is a huge difference between getting an “A” or “1.0″ at a top school versus the same grade from a low-scoring school.
Sunstar also put up a list of 47 nursing schools that have been chosen for the establishment of a virtual skills laboratory. I’m not familiar with a virtual skills lab but it sounds like a good idea. But more than these, why don’t we start at the beginning and impose a quality of education or some standard on schools across the country that offer or want to open a nursing program?
What do you think?

back home in pinas, we have a training school. i for one was one of the trainer in that said training school. my brother in law owns an agency in the phils. that has been in operation since 1978 for seamen and allied seafarers positions and skilled workers for japan like welders and ship builders including vets. we have tie up with a japanese firm. last year, the office have started sending caregivers to japan, but has to undergo a comprehensive japanese language course. a training division was opened up and started and the trainers were nursing graduates. there was a demo class conducted infront of a japanese principal hiring the pinay caregivers. after the presentation of the nurse trainer, the japanese rep asked some nursing questions to this trainer that is conducting the training. she did not pass the scrutiny of this japanese. then later on we found out she was a graduate of a nursing school in the northern province and her credentials are all fake and the school of nursing she has attended does not have an affiliate hospital for training. so, now my sister in law who is a retired nurse in the states is now the one doing the trainings for the caregivers candidate.WHAT WAS THE MORAL OF THE STORY? It shows only one thing, not all nursing school has the quality of education. by the way we are running a Community Integrated Living Assistance (CILA) housing in Illinois. these are for the dounce syndrome in a house under the CILA program.we are trying to hire some nurses from pinas for the house, but our petition was denied. this was after the scandal about the nursing exams.
Mel – that’s too bad about your petition. The scandal has put our nurses in jeopardy, and it’ll be sometime before we can regain that trust again. But most of companies who re-hire Filipino nurses do it because the nurses who currently work for them have proven their mettle. Hopefully with some quality control imposed we’ll be improving our nursing education.

The best thing to do is that we need to focus more on the realistic goals, to build an ephemeral option to preserve the quality of nurses that many institutions can produce. The SCHOOL ALONE will not always be the STANDARD in passing the board, it is how the students excel and strives to comply with the standards of his future profession. It will be much better that the implication of proper aptitude exam should be implemented. Our institution only started opening the COLLEGE just three years ago, but with the help of God it successfully earned the highest passing rate established by newest nursing schools, with a 91% point rating. National University, a 107 year institution has responded enough with the proper requirements needed to respond with its SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY in producing cultured and globally competitive nurses. Equip with enough resources, an nursing laboratory with an OR set-up, conducive classrooms and dedicated faculty in giving education to their prospective students. The main factor is that the school was already a pioneering institution, even though the college was founded in 2004. It became the gateway for challenges to meet the standards of the program. But still, facilities is not enough, it is just simply we had HARDWORKING, DEDICATED, AND RESPONSIBLE C0-STUDENTS that pushes their own limits in order to set their personal standards of quality nursing education, to all 21 Nationalians who passed the NLE, GOOD LUCK!
XAVIER UNIVERSITY _ ATENEO DE CAGAYAN is the number 1 Nursing School of the country
Rejoinder to XU as the no. 1 Nursing School
I heard that they were able to graduate 6 batches nursing students in their school with more 100 takers of the board exams, two batches were not able to make it 100%, the the fourt batch have one failed, who then passed the following exam, and this recent batch (2007) have 98% passing rate or 4 didnt make it or a total of 5 who were not able to make in their first attempt. The other piece of information is that XU College of Nursing was closed down in after four batches with only 1 student didnt able to pass the board in the first take, and five years later they reopened – they got 100% and last year and now 98% passing rate.
centro escolar university … magaling din… hahaha…
what’d the importance of getting a high board exam rating?or getting just a passing rate of 75-79%?
Hi I am a student nurse and I am saddened by the fact that the reputation of Filipino nurses are tarnished by the past leakage in the PRC Nursing Board Exam.
But there wouldn’t be any need for cheating if the nursing school provides skills and knowledge to their students, something you get from good quality education.
The one to blame for the sprouting of poor, cheap, and substandard nursing schools is CHED! How dare they allow some nursing schools to open when they lack the necessary equipment and competent teachers. If ever these students from these substandard schools graduate due to cheating and ends up killing a patient abroad (because of lack in competence) then the Philippine nurses will be put to shame!
Good thing there are schools like XAVIER UNIVERSITY – ATENEO DE CAGAYAN who have always produced competent nurses! As proof they always get a 100% passing rate in the board exams. Well except for two cases, a 99% and a 98% (latest, December 2007). The problem is not passing but topping the board exam!
There should be better regulation on education and substandard schools that produces cheaters should close down and be heavily penalized. We are dealing with lives here, so if these student nurses cheat, they might be dishonest enough in the future as not to report their incompetence that could lead to the death of their patient.
XAVIER University College of Nursing is the best…un lang
