National College Entrance Exam- back again, with more
I’ve always thought having the NCEE (National College Entrance Exam) was a necessity. A difficult exam, no doubt, and closed much of some teenager’s chances for college. As with any standardized exam, it can not completely measure a student’s ability to comprehend higher education or success much later in life. But but I thought it was needed anyhow – it allows colleges to place standards/cut offs into their acceptance; it helps a student identify areas of strengths and weaknesses (at least in terms of how well he paid attention/coped in high school); it’s a push to do better next time, next year. I guess in 1994, that’s not what the Department of Education thought when the NCEE was phased out.
Well, turns out, NCEE will be back. This time as the National College Assessment Exam. Where’s the difference? According to Secretary Jesli Lapus, it will have everything from the NCEE but, and now be in both verbal and non-verbal forms. More importantly, the tests be like a career guidance for the examinees.
“If the tests found the students to have scored high in Math and Science (non-verbal), he would be advised to take engineering, architecture or computer science,” he said.
Or take up Liberal Arts majors if the student performs better in the verbal tests. Technical and vocational aptitudes will also be tested, as well as provide students with an option to pusue entrepreneurship.
Hmmm. Now this new exam may actually be better than the old NCEE.

The NCEE is a worthless standardized test that bars all hope for a student ever getting through college…
Those who fail the NCEE apparently have no choice but to settle for a lousy 2-year course like nursing… or worse: “care-taking” (I personally have no ambition of becoming one of the 3 mil. maids abroad – to join our country’s yaya workforce)
It’s just another government ploy to separate the “wheat from the chaff” – the academic nerds and “underachievers”. Not all of us are excellent test-takers. Not all nerds and smart geeks actually excel/succeed/become productive members of society. Not all valedictorians end up becoming the CEO’s of the world’s biggest companies.
Everyone deserves a chance.
