Six million Filipino children are malnourished

The latest survey shows that 200,000 Filipino children are living on the streets “exposed to unsavory influences. As many as 60,000 are vulnerable to sexual exploitation. At least 66 per cent under the age of six do not have any childcare. And more than 6 million children are malnourished.

Grim statistics and just heartwrenching to see the Philippines’ future generation thought of this way. I don’t even have to show pictures. We all have a mental image of our country’s “poorest of the poor”.

“If the villages do not act within the next ten years, the Philippines will lose another generation of young Filipinos to stunted mental, physical and emotional development. There will be huge added burdens to society and the economy if malnourished and underachieving youth are barely able to cope with the challenges of higher schooling and the changing workplace.”

How can we help?

If you are in the Philippines, there are so many hands-on way to participate in helping children get a better life. There are great non-government organizations and churches that serve the poor. Aside from donations, they need volunteers and mentors who can assist in anyway possible.

If you’re outside the country, there are other ways to help out besides donating time, money or goods. Sponsoring a child is one great avenue to change a child’s future. There’s World Vision and Compassion International, to name a few. Set up your own foundation if you like. Go on extended medical missions. Anything to help.

I think my appeal is to just do it. One life we change makes all the difference in the changing the future of our country.

We hear you! I am joining you in your appeal for help. Maybe we should trim the gift giving (toys etc.) expenses and give what we can save to buy food for the malnourished children of the Philippines instead? A small step but hopefully will raise the awreness for a more practical sharing of kindness during the holidays.

    Grace,
I will try to convince my MC riding club to help. Yeah you’re right! A small amount of dollars goes a long way to feed the hungry in the Philippines. “The smile trai” is also another charity fund I am trying to help. Bring back a nice smile to a kid’s face and it’s worth a lifetime of self esteem.

It is such a sin that so many children go hungry in the Philippines while crooked polititions live in gilded palaces with golden artifacts. When will the common people of the Philippines say “enough is enough”?

My daughter is living with me with her Canadian husband and their 2 kids, ages 3 yrs and 17 month old baby. I look after them fulltime 5 days a week. I am training them to wear their slippers around the house and shoes when they play out in the backyard. My problem is when my-son-in law is at home, he lets them play roam around in and out of the house barefoot. I asked him to follow through what I was trining his kids and explained to him why I was doing it. He argued that it is a Filipino Culture I am trying to impose, I argued it never part of the Filipino culture of training the kids to wear slippers around the house or shoes for that matter. I told him it is about teaching about cleanliness and hygiene. I told him why I want them to wear slippers around the house – their feet becomes dirty and then they jump on the bed or the couches especially when they play i n their sandpit.
Am I right? How can I better explain to my son-in-law why children especially toddlers the importance of what I am trying to teach his kids.

Many filipino children that are malnourished, because of poverty. Nagkakaganito ang mga bata dahil pabaya ang mga mgulang.
