Life in the US as a Filipino nurse-recruit

When I read this story in The Seattle Times, I really felt for the nurses from our country. I hope you’ll find time to read Maricris Espino’s experience here as written by Paula Bock.
Like almost all Filipino families, I have relatives who are nurses. My godmother/aunt is one, and she left for the US right […]

Faces of Manila Winning Photo

Canon recently concluded its Shoot and Run 2006 photography contest in Manila, and I’m excited to show you the winning photo in the category “Faces of Manila”! Jeff Lopez, who took the shot and won a brand new Canon 30D camera as first place winner, graciously allowed me to post it here at FS.

With unfortunate […]

Yeng Constantino video - “Hawak Kamay”

PDA’s Grand Star Dreamer Yeng Constantino… in case you’re still wondering if she’s really that good, here’s how she sounds -

This is “Hawak-Kamay”, Yeng’s own competition, as lead vocalist of a rock band. The inspiration comes from her cousin she grew close with. The video is of the PDA scholars in their 16-weeks of classes.

Yeng Constantino wins the first Pinoy Dream Academy

Yeng Constantino is the first Grand Star Dreamer at the Pinoy Dream Academy!

I actually got to watch this live too. Yeng was the best singer of the lot, and of course the person with the most votes. She sang her own composition “And Awitin”. Looking at her you’d think she’s a sweet 1618-year charmer, but […]

How do you celebrate a Filipino Christmas?

Filipinos do celebrate Christmas differently, as we’ve been saying here at FS. Aside from the yummy delicacies that we load our tables with, and the other traditions/symbols we blogged about, what other Christmas traditions does your family have?
For instance, when do you celebrate Christmas - eve of, or morning?
What memories/traditions from your parents […]

The blog for the Filipino entrepreneur

I grew up with parents who were into agriculture, while delving into entrepreneurship and/or sales here and there. At one time or another, we had a restaurant/pub, ran or managed a tomato, coconut, fruit tree, sugarcane farm/plantation, sold nata de coco, day-old chicks, chicken manure, grew orchids and various other vegetables in our small backyard. […]

Pardon the Infrequent Posting

I apologize for my infrequent posting here at FS. With Christmas nearing, things are getting a bit hectic. Christmas cards to write and send, decors to put up, gifts to buy and wrap, you know the deal. I hope you’re also keeping busy with your family preparing for this happiest of seasons.
Ilang tulog na lang, […]

Other athletes kick butts at the Asian Games

After everything was counted, the Philippines took home 4 gold, 6 silver and 9 bronze medals at the 15th Asian Games. We ranked 18, sure, but I find no sense counting medals against other Asian countries.
We have athletes who won. Dang, we have athletes who can play! And I am proud of them for working […]

Filipino athletes in boxing, wushu and pool win gold at ASIAN Games 2006

Without a doubt, we - Filipinos - own the game of pool and boxing. Proven again at the Doja ASIAN Games 2006 .
Golden boys Antonio “Ga-ga” Gabica (9-ball billiards), Violito Payla and Joan Tipon (boxing) and Rene Catalan (wushu) each brought our country proud by wearing top medals.
Violito Payla took the Men’s flyweight gold over […]
