Thousands died in mudslide after typhoon Durian hits Bicol
Typhoon Durian (local name ‘Reming’) missed Manila, but left the Bicol region as a wasteland. The category 4 storm (at 230 kph) was stronger than the previous Milenyo (190 kph max) that ravaged Manila and the surrounding regions of southern Luzon.

As of Monday, 543 have died and 740 were missing, but these numbers are going to rise as more people are being found.

Reming buried more than 700 villages around Mt. Mayon with mudslides and lajar that reached several meters high.

Mayon’s recent series of eruptions and Milenyo’s rains caused the volcanic soil to become loose and muddy. Reming’s torrential rains just unglued everything. Someone wrote to tell us that the Cagsawa Ruins (where only the belltower survived an 1814 eruption) was now completely buried.

[...] Yes, it’s true. The country is still recovering from Typhoon Durian, and here comes another one. [...]
It is terrible. My dad is Bicolano and it seems like the more we hear, the worse it gets. We are doing are best to raise funds for relief efforts in the region. I own a small fil-am business and we decided to donate 50% of our profits from all sales through the rest of the year to the BNAA (Bikol National Assoc of America)to help fund their relief efforts in the Bicol region. It’s not much, but I want to at least try to help make a difference. If anyone wants to join in, you can help by visiting my website- http://www.TaglishTees.com or just by spreading the word.
Maraming Salamat Po!
