Biofuels Law in the Philippines

The results of the recently-concluded ASEAN summit are starting to be seen. One of the agreements ratified in the meeting was the Declaration on East Asian Energy Security. In conjunction with this declaration, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed into law a bill promoting biofuels as an alternative energy source.

The biofuels act seeks to reduce dependence on imported fuels with due regard to the protection of public health, the environment and natural ecosystems consistent with the country’s sustainable economic growth that would expand opportunities for livelihood.

It mandates the use of biofuels as a measure to develop and utilize indigenous renewable and sustainably-sourced clean energy sources to reduce dependence on imported oil.

The biotechnology industry in the Philippines is sure to get a boost from this law. With this law behind them, enterpreneurs and scientists who want to develop biofuels and related systems will be able to get funding much easier than before.
