‘The’ Filipino-American cookbook
I was just at the bookstore and ooooh(!) if there was a cookbook that enticed me, this is it!
Finally, a fusion-cuisine take on our local dishes. “The Filipino-American Kitchen” by restaurant-owner and Chicago chef Jennifer Aranas looks to me a great resource for those wanting to learn Filipino cooking, me topping the list.
Honestly, (and you can ask Maricar) I did everything else in our house except cook. All my siblings are better cooks that I was and the only dish I can whip up was “piniritong isda” (fried fish). Thank goodness my sibs said I do it really well (or were they pulling my leg?) I had no desire to cook or learn to. Until I met my future hubby. He can’t cook either and between the two of us I was more flexible… and well, you can imagine what dishes were served in our household. Believe it or not, I still have to look at my torn-apart old cookbook to make sure I’m cooking Afritada correctly.
So this book is a treasure to behold. Finally, a new and better cookbook of all good things Pinoy. Here’s to a healthier, happier kitchen!
Now, what’s in your cooking arsenal? Do share your indispensable Filipino cookbooks with us. (OR were you trained to cook growing up? I so envy you!)
