Filipina Soul – April ‘07 round up

Filipina Soul – April ‘07 round up

Wow. What a month April was! Those in the Philippines, did you just feel a ten-degree (celcius) jump from March to April?! Argh. Apparently, our country is in danger of catastrophic climate change! Can you even remember how cool the early days of March were? Summer and global warming are here to stay!
What was the month like?
VACATION DAYS. Maricar and I went home in March for our brother’s wedding and a much-needed but too-short vacation. I wrote a lot about our experiences there – our stay at Los Banos, UP and Trace …read more

Google Adsense Checks in the Philippines More Secure?

Google Adsense Checks in the Philippines More Secure?

If you have a monetized blog or website, reside in the Philippines and are receiving checks from Google, this post by J. Angelo Racoma (Google AdSense Checks in the Philippines: Now More Secure) might interest you.
It seems that Google is now sending checks to the Philippines in bulk, and a company mails them out individually. This presumably prevents the checks getting lost or stolen (just because they originate from the U.S.). Angelo is still trying to find out more about the possible changes that Google has made. But it is good news for AdSense publishers if it will indeed ensure …read more

NYT Article: “A Good Provider is One Who Leaves”

NYT Article: “A Good Provider is One Who Leaves”

The New York Times’ Jason DeParle discusses the worldwide migrant workers’ phenomenon in his article “A Good Provider is One who Leaves“. His primary illustration is the Comodas family, which has at least 2 generations of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
The article made me think of how the millions of OFWs, who are away from their loved ones, affect the core values of the Filipino family. Countless children grow up not really knowing their mother/father. They are well-provided for, much more than their not-so-lucky neighbors. They can have 3 meals a day, watch oversized TV sets, go to good schools, and …read more

Philippines Moving Toward Climate Change Catastrophe

Philippines Moving Toward Climate Change Catastrophe

A report released by Greenpeace Southeast Asia scared me so much, I had a hard time reading it. According to the environmental watchdog, the Philippines is “on its way to a major climate change catastrophe–… unless the government takes urgent and ambitious action to avert a disaster that will put millions of Filipinos at risk”.
A briefing paper titled “The Philippines: A Climate Hotspot” (PDF file) details the weather-related tragedies that have befallen the country in recent decades. These include the flashflood in Ormoc in 1991, and the landslides in Cherry Hill (1999), Baguio/La Trinidad (2001), Guinsaugon (2006) and Legazpi (2006). …read more
