Filipino thriller ‘Sigaw (The Echo)’ remade for Hollywood

echo

The opening scenes of a dark and eirie apartment will leave you paranoid for the rest of the movie. The story follows Marvin, who proudly bought a condo in a dilapidated building. His solace is broken that first night when he hears screaming and arguments coming from down the hall. Every night, he would hear his neighbor, a pyschopath policeman beat his wife and daughter. Nothing creepy about it, you think, until you realize there’s really no one there.

echo-sigaw2By far the creepiest moments are with the child . When the apartment door opens without warning it’s enough to scare you, but when the child runs in and hides under the bed, and with a blood red face, I admit Laranas had me freaked out. This feeling is reinforced when it occurs again and there is no child, just the camera hinting at the movements of someone. An excellent method of building unease in the audience.

Scared now?

Read two reviews here and here and find out why this might yet be the scarriest Filipino film. For real. This is par above those zombie-kinds of pinoy horror movies that are not even scary, or funny.

So I just read from Sunstar that this acclaimed Filipino thriller Sigaw (The Echo) is being remade into a movie-for-Hollywood. Yam Laranas, the co-writer and director for Sigaw, will direct this remake. Schedule begins mid-August in Toronto and will star Jesse Bradford of the ‘Flags of our Fathers’ fame.

    Grace,

I look forward to seeing this movie and YES you have me scared already. LOL

I spent some time in the Philippines in 2005 and during a stay in Manjuyod, Negros Oriental. I had the pleasure of watching a horror movie in Tagalog.

By the way I don’t speak Tagalog.

I say all of this to tell you that even thought i couldn’t understand the dialog…I understood the movie completely!!!

And yes it scared me ALOT!

My girlfriend played a cruel joke on me right after the movie was finished that emphasized my feelings about the movie.

    But that’s another story

    Thanks

    Don

Don.. what movie was that that you saw? Do tell us what joke your girlfriend played..

Oh, and Sigaw(The Echo) will be in English, so it’ll be something everyone understands, which might even be more scarier.
By the way, Negros Oriental is a place known for real/supernatural horror stories….

Mary Jo – if it puts the Philippines in Hollywood, then I’m all for making it as scary as it gets ;-)

    Grace,

I wish I could tell you the name of the movie. But if you don’t mind a sort of long reply I will tell you the plot. Or what I can remember from it.

A family moves into a new home that had been known to keep neighborhood children frightened for some time.

Right away Ghost started appearing to the wife and children of course frightening them. And it appears the ghost could possess people and it started trying to kill the wife and husband.

Then the Evil spirit moved onto killing the wifes friends…

it finally kills the father, I think…

And just when you think she got away from all the terror and her family was safe…it turns out…..

I think I will save that part I don’t know if Filipina’s like to hear the end of movies…Americans make a big deal of it…so you tell me if you what to hear the end..

And please if you know or recognize this movies description please tell me where to find it. So i can buy it.

If you give me permission to tell the end of the movie i will include the story of how my GF scared me half to death. ;-)

Don, you can’t leave the story hanging like that! Now you gotta tell the rest of it. Hold on, though… Is it really really scary? I don’t watch scary movies, cause I’m afraid I’m going to have a bad dream! But maybe I will read your story if you post it. ;)

    Maricar,

I don’t know if the ending will be scary for you but I do think it’s safe to assume that you will read the more. ;)

For me the ending was surprising and creepy.

After the the star of the show seemed to finally get away from all the Haunts, ghost, and demons.

She drives to the last remaining friend she has that’s “alive.”

Her friend invites her in the house and tells her to go to the back yard, sit down and relax and she will be with her right away.

The star of the movie does so….

And she sees her children playing in the back yard. And she sees her husband come through the back door to greet her.

She was relieve and confused because she thought he and the children were killed.

OK,for those reading this please understand that I’m happy for her because I love happy endings! So I was happy that the Hubby and children were actually alive and going to be OK.

I felt good for the woman I was smiling and cheering her on for surviving all that terror and tragedy.

Only to see some of the dead friends start to come out of the back door of the house and greet her.

She’s confused, I’m confused, and i’m sure our confused too….

Suddenly she realizes and the look on her face gives it all away…

    She is dead now also!

Then the screen black…and the credits ran!

All I could say is Oh My God!!!

And to think I gathered all of this from movie…in a language..I didn’t understand…I knew some small words but not enough.

I am not pointing this out to be boastful but to boast about the producer, director and actors for creating such a great movie.

I wish I knew the name of it now…but even if I never see it again…I will remember it forever.

    Thanks for listening,

    Don

Another scary movie, “Ang Pamana (The Inheritance)” was released last year and even their website is creepy. Pinoy horror/scary flicks have always been great.
