Philippine BPO services are booming; Wachovia is latest proof

With cheap labor costs and English-speaking natives, the Philippines continues to be a great place for outsourcing. A lot of U.S. companies are now locating (or relocating) their customer service centers offshore. Wachovia is now joining that growing list.

“It’s all about adding capacity for our company,” Phillips Brown said. “Over the next five to seven years, we expect a significant increase in call-center volume. Our plan is to use the Philippines facility to offset that volume.”

There are several reasons that companies, in particular Wachovia, finds the Philippines attractive for business.

The overseas location gives Wachovia more geographic diversity — which is helpful for 24-hour operations — and access to a country known for its growing call-center industry. The Philippines has a large English-speaking population, with accents more familiar-sounding to Americans and a cultural affinity for the U.S., according to the memo.

However, although cost-cutting is a major initiative for U.S. companies to shift offshore, E-commerce also reported in the same article that customer are rating their experience 26 points lower when they found that their dealing with an outsourced call center.

I am personally thankful for BPO for the jobs that the industry brings to our country. So I hope our fellow ‘kababayans’ continue to do well in their jobs, to keep companies coming and making the Philippines a suitable place for their BPOs.

Philippine’s Business Process outsourcing sector is booming right through the roof. The growth rate projected by the sector is indeed amazing.
