Stars of Gawad Kalinga’s “Paraiso” share their own stories
Maricel Soriano. Cesar Montano. Michael V. Ricky Davao. Carmi Martin.
There is one thing in common with these reputable celebrities -
They appeared in Gawad Kalinga’s fund-raising movie “Paraiso” – for free.
The “Paraiso” trilogy appealed to movie-goers everywhere not just because of the stars’ presence, but the message that captivates the heart. These celebrities felt privileged to be doing this work for GK as a labor of love. Why? Says Michael V, “The spirit of being Filipino is very much alive in a GK site I visited. And apparently this is the same atmostphere in every GK village.”
Adds Maricel Soriano,” the first page of the script already captured my heart… and moved me.”
Three powerful stories make up “Paraiso” (watch the trailer here) -
- “Ang Kapatid Kong si Elvis (My Brother Elvis)” is a story of a boy who ate pebbles to fight off hunger. Child actor Paulken Bustillo portrays the role of Elvis. Michael V and Carmi Martin play his parents. Joel Ruiz directed the episode produced by Butch Jimenez.
- “Marie,” starring Cesar Montano and Lexie Schultz, is based on how one’s tragic loss can be turned into a living legacy and a new beginning. Marie Rose Abad perished in the 9/11 World Trade Center tragedy and her husband fulfills her dreams by building and dedicating a Gawad Kalinga village in her honor. Ricky Davao worked at the helm of the episode, produced by Tony Gloria.
- “Umiyak Man ang Langit (Even If Heaven Cries)” tells the touching experience of Jocelyn Llorente, who lost her loved ones in the mudslides of Southern Leyte. Maricel Soriano plays the lead role, directed by the award-winning Jun Lana and produced by Tony Tuviera.

I’m not able to be there but according to their website, there are almost almost 700 delegates from the US, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Columbia and the Philippines who joined the event. This is a very good news to everyone!
