Philippine News Links – on Sison, PepsiCo, Letran-San Beda, Wowowee and the economy

Just sharing some news from the Philippines that caught my eye today..

14 more days in detention for Sison. Communist leader Jose Maria Sison, who was arrested last week in the Netherlands for the alleged murder of his communist colleagues. Charges were supposedly dismissed but he’s still going to be detained.

Court drops libel charges by Pepsi in ‘349’ fiasco. The latest in a series of court battles between PepsiCo and “Number Fever 349″ winners that began 15 years ago. I still remember the hype and hysteria over this.

Letran, San Beda rumble in post- game. Taking the game off-court is always a bad idea.

DTI, MTRCB move to quell ‘Wowowee’ uproar. The ABS-CBN noontime show is under investigation for an alleged cheating on its “Wilyonaryo” contest.

Sigma Rho execs suspended as UP hazing probe starts. Death of having victim Cris Anthony Mendez led to the 30-day suspension of Sigma Rho officials. UP and all universities should really have a stringent law against hazing.

Arroyo: 7.5% GDP growth fastest in 2 decades. Now this is good news!

It’s a popular show, and a lot of people flock to it in the hopes of winning big. Allegations of cheating or rigging is big news.

WOWOWEE is not so WOW after all (based on The Weekly Sillimanian, issued 2nd week of Dec,2007)

    > There are 2 main reasons why Wowowee isn’t really a “great show” or as “great” as most of the masses (principally pertaining to the common people living below the poverty line; poor; middle class):

    1) Exploited women
    - I dont think these skimpily dressed girls are aware that they are actually reducing themselves.. Quote and quote, “less of a woman because of the exploitation that they are into”…

    2) Sense of dependency
-Viewers of this show could create a generalization that we Filipinos are just being dependent on the cash prizes that “Kuya Willie” is handing out..

    >For me, there is no sense of balance reciprocity on this.. The contestants would think that they are the ones being greatly rewarded (with Willie getting highly noted and praised for his “generosity”), when in fact, the SHOW and WILLIE REVILLAME are the ones who benefit more..

    >I strongly believe that refinements should be done…
