Philippine coral reefs in danger

The second largest coral reefs in Asia is in very bad shape.

The Philippine archipelago is world-famous and home to diverse marine species living in the country’s coral reefs. The Philippine reefs are the most unique in the Pacific Ocean and home to over 2000 species of fish alone.Tubbataha Reefs Marine Park in Palawan, Apo Island in Negros Oriental, Apo Reef in Puerto Galera, Mindoro, and Verde Island Passage off Batangas are just some of the more well-known destinations.

Unfortunately, these natural treasure throves are in danger. The El Nino has caused the most serious impact when it caused coral bleaching and killed 20 per cent of the country’s reefs. Adding more injury is the impact of human activities.

According to Reef Check’s latest survey, the threats to Philippine coral reefs are similar to most developing countries that have high population growth rates and with local coastal communities contributing a significant portion of the national population.

Overfishing, dynamite fishing and marine pollution are some more threats encountered by our marine biodiversity.

The ABS-CBN article ‘RP coral reefs, second largest in Asia, in bad shape’ looks at this problem in more detail.
