Filipino expat to be Beijing Olympic torch bearer
When was the last time that a Filipino carried the Olympic torch?
1964 at the Tokyo Olympics.
Next year, Marcos Antonio Torres will become the next Filipino chosen to carry the Olympic torch across Beijing for the 2008 Games.
Torres, a marketing manager for M Moser Associates and a reporter for Metrozine Magazine was chosen to be one of the eight torch bearers. Torres was picked from among 262 applicants in an online voting contest organized by Olympic sponsor Lenovo Group and the government newspaper China Daily.
“It started out with one e-mail which I forwarded to people in my address book. After that, I wrote a blog, and then a day or two after there were over 1,000 blogs about my appeal,” he told The Associated Press.
The winners will have to be approved by the Beijing Organizing Committee of the games, but the list of 8 include an American who works with Chinese orphans, an Indian business manager, a Japanese who chairs a computer company in Beijing, a Colombian student, among others. Candidates have to be devoted to communicating the “real China” to the world, the China Daily said.
