How was your Holy Week?

So did you have fun during Holy Week?

That may be an odd question to ask, except if you’re in the Philippines. Last week was not just a time of penitensya, and remembering the sufferings of Christ. It is also traditionally the time to go to the beach and have a family vacation.

I’m not perfectly sure how this otherwise somber time transformed into gimmick week. But for as long as I could remember, the Holy Week is the time to go swimming, relax and enjoy family time. My family has spent it at beaches in Batangas, in Baguio City, and in the 100 Islands of Pangasinan. It may be because last week is looked upon as the unofficial start of summer. Or because everybody’s off work or school. Or maybe because it’s just too hot to be hanging around the house doing nothing.

When I lived in La Trinidad, I always took the week off to go home to Los Banos, thus avoiding the crowds who flocked to the summer capital to cool off. At the start of the week, all the roads going up to Baguio City were packed with vehicles inching along. At the end of the week, I would see them going the other way! I, on the other hand, would be merrily going the opposite way, via Victory Bus.

So did you go anywhere interesting? How’s the swimming in the hot pools in Los Banos? Are the beaches and resorts still packed?

Nothing interesting happened. I just stayed at home and reviewed for the exams this week.

I spent the Holy Week at my hometown. Nothing beats spending holidays with friends and family. :-)
