Manila Ocean Park Oceanarium

I’m so excited to be able to share this news with you! As a biologist, I’m thrilled that the Philippines finally has its own oceanarium.

The state-of-the-art Manila Ocean Park had its soft opening last week, on February 29. It’s gorgeous and truly world-class!  Let’s take a tour, via Mel & Joey:

The oceanarium is just the first phase of construction which will eventually include a hotel and mall, and open marine habitats. Already, it has the following sections open to visitors:

1. Agos (Flow) – a rainforest motiff complete with 8 tanks of freshwater fishes.

2. Bahura (The Reef) – exihibition of artificial corals in 48 tanks

3. Laot (Fishing Ground) – features big fish and Eagle-spotted rays in a long tank.

4. Kalaliman (The Deep) – showcases marine animals found in the deepest parts of Philippine waters.

5. Buhay na Karagatan (Living Ocean) – the main attraction of the oceanarium is a 25-meter long walkway tunnel with 220-degree curved acrylic walls similarly seen in Ocean Park Hong Kong, Singapore’s Underwater World in Sentosa, Siam’s Ocean World in Bangkok, Thailand and Kuala Lumpur’s Aquaria in Malaysia. The difference between MOP’s is a 220-degree curved tunnel as compared to the standard 180-degree curved tunnels seen in other Asian countries.

6. Overhang Tank – variety of rays fly over while you’re under this unique Overhang Tank.

7. Pating (Shark) – features several species of shark.

Let’s finish the tour with this second segment from Mel & Joey:

Isn’t it great!!? This is a definite must-see in Manila! The Manila Ocean Park is located behind the Quirino Grandstand at the Rizal Park (Luneta).
Check out this information page for entrance fees, operating hours and phone numbers to the Park.

I heard there were always so many people waiting to enter the park, creating very long lines. Better wait for April or May when the crowd thins, then.

I haven’t been to the MOP yet as I plan to go visit when things have calmed down a bit …. lesser crowd and HOPEFULLY more courteous staff as what I have read from the post of remzamora in http://www.ourawesomeplanet.com/awesome/2007/11/manilaoceanpark.html.

I too have seen the oceanarium in HK and even the gigantic oceanariums in the U.S. Yes, I agree that the fishes in the Tunnel are small fish as compared to the ones I have seen overseas based from most of the photographs and videos of the MOP online.

However, the one BIG thing that disappoints me and is very noticeable even in the photographs and videos is the design and seascaping of the aquarium interior. I was hoping to see a more natural effect …. one that mimics the naturalness and natural look of the ocean floor. What I mean here is that in the photos, I can clearly see objects that are man-made structures. The drain on the flooring of the aqaurium inside the tunnel is so clearly visible. In some aquariums, I can see man-made, objects like a ship steering wheel inside … I am aware that the designers are trying to add some sort of “seascaping” (as opposed to landscaping) but those man-made decors becomes more of a distraction to the naturalness of the seaquarium instead of enhancing it. I think that the interior designers of the seaquariums should adopt a more natural and more calming look to their seascaping effort.

    8. the toch pool tank which you can interact with the different specie.

the shark tank -which is the home of the black tip and white tip shark not to mention the nurse shark..were the one who fabricate the coral wall of 5 mt. high and 6 mt. dept,
with different corals also which manila ocean park coordinates with us by putting thier selected corals too.
the crocodile pond -as you can see the specie are not yet found in the pond but they do call
this crocs pond you may take a look at the area with the cascading falls in the rock formation in the wall goes thru, in the pond plus the the 10 mt. log which was laid down in the decking to look more realistic we conceptualize the tree by putting the amazon orange mushroom,to look more also like a dead tree but with a growth and the roots extended to the wall as if thiey were clinging to look more space
    to grow bigger and wider.

I am 101 percent that you will enjoy your trip to this oceanarium by looking them you will experience the world that is hidden from us and savour the natures of wonders by protecting them and nourish them also by educating our friend and relatives that their planet existed before our planet.

Is it possible for them to see all the featured places even on wheel chairs? How about for disabled persons? can they access the featured sites? also just like in other sites abroad (OP HK) the management have personnels that assist those disabled persons and elevators.

Thank God for Manila Ocean Park for conceptualizing the awareness and preservation of our marine environment as well as its habitat; representing how rich is our Philippine waters. It also promotes Philippine tourism and an appreciation of 7,107 islands of the Philippines.

    TO: admin office of MOP,

I hope that you have some branches to sell ticket for the entrance of MOP.. because based on the opinion of the others (mahirap, mahaba ang line sa bayaran ng ticket and also mainit…) super nakakainis pala based on them sa pila pa lang inis ka na….). I hope administration of MOP has a future plan.. para maayos ang ganitong problem..

I hope Manila Ocean Park inspires many of us Filipinos especially our young Filipino youth to be more aware of our islands beautiful fresh water and marine life inhabitants. Filipinos are constantly bombarded by the media telling us how messed up our country is…Lets take a step back and see what’s still left…Visit Manila Ocean Park and learn about the ocean and how it play an important roll in our environment – A collection of Philippine native tropical fishes, corals, shark, sting rays, and more.

Us Filipinos have forgotten about the richness of our land and seas. The Philippine rainforest and sea is truly the only treasure we have left. Lets learn more about them. I dont work for MOP I’m a supporter of Philippine rich bio-diversity. Mabuhay!

Its great to hear that finally the used to be Manila Aquarium (during our times) has finally evolved to an Oceanarium. The fee seems to be cool compared to OZ, NZ, SG, US and the rest. But, I hope someday soon it will be subsidized so that everybody could get a glimpse of it. I have seen almost all types of fishes but it is different “sa sariling bansa ang Pinas!” Wow, I now sounds patriotic hahaha!

Basta isa yan sa pupuntahan ko plus there is a new mall in QC daw which is like a Greenbelt 3 daw. I hope mas dumami pwedeng puntahan sa atin. And lastly, sana ang Pilipinas e ibenta ang tourism naman sa mga international catalogues. Sana lang, kasi dinaig na tayo ng Vietnam. I hope the DOT will do something more.

    hello..it’s quite good i think..

but, this oceanarium would only cater the curiosity of the urban people..

some of the plants are made of plastic..

only rubbles are present in the station where sharks are living.. ok lang xla?.. they are deceiving the public…

some of the species were named incorrectly… that should be taken with caution..

    entrance fee is quite expensive…
