The Regions of the Philippines

Ph_physical_map

7,100 islands. 136 cities. 81 provinces. 17 regions.

It’s always been difficult for me to remember the different regions. Especially now that they have changed a little since I was in school. The current divisions are in the table below.

Each region has a name, a number/designation and a government center. Gone is the Southern Tagalog Region, which has been divided into the CALABARZON and MIMAROPA regions. The names are much easier to remember, because they reflect divisions based on geography and language. The numbers and designations need more intellectual exercise, except for CAR, NCR and ARMM, which are merely acronyms of the regional names.

Region     Designation     Government center
Ilocos Region Region I San Fernando City, La Union
Cagayan Valley Region Region II Tuguegarao City, Cagayan
Central Luzon Region Region III     City of San Fernando, Pampanga
CALABARZON Region Region IV-A Calamba City, Laguna
MIMAROPA Region Region IV-B Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro
Bicol Region Region V Legazpi City, Albay
Western Visayas Region Region VI Iloilo City
Central Visayas Region Region VII Cebu City
Eastern Visayas Region Region VIII Tacloban City, Leyte
Zamboanga Peninsula Region Region IX Zamboanga City
Northern Mindanao Region Region X Cagayan de Oro City
Davao Region Region XI Davao City
SOCCSKSARGEN Region Region XII Koronadal City, South Cotabato
Caraga Region Region XIII Butuan City
Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao ARMM Cotabato City
Cordillera Administrative Region CAR Baguio City
National Capital Region NCR Manila

Officially, there are 7,107 islands in the Philippine archipelago–the disputed Spratly group of islands is not included, of course.

I can still somewhat remember these regional divisions but I dunno until when. Hehe.

Is that 7100 during high tide or low tide? I always thought it was cool how some folks would point out the difference to me when I was there.

  3. March 23rd, 2008 | 12:26 am

    I think that’s already low tide. :D

Silentrai, 7,100 is just a rounded-up (or down) number. I don’t think anybody really knows the exact count of the islands and islets at high tide or low. :)

Rhaynne, the region numbers are official designations. Region 14 may very well be ARMM, but it’s not called region 14 but ARMM.
