The U.S. military’s health insurance program has been swindled out of more than $100 million over the past decade in the Philippines, where doctors, hospitals and clinics have conspired with American veterans to submit bogus claims, according to prosecutors and court records. – AP (full news here)

The health insurance in the center of it all is Tricare, a Pentagon-run program for servicemen and their dependents. The fraud has been so extensive that of the 37 people indicted, about 20 remain free!

Positive things are going on in some prisons in the Philippines. This time, I’m not talking about the famous dancing inmates of Cebu.
Fashion designer Puey Quinones is collaborating with some of the inmates in notorious prisons in the Philippines. The inmates produce stunning works of hand-painted art for Puey’s high-end fashion designs.

Beyond the money they get from the work, the inmates say that the creative activity has given them back some of their dignity and a link to the outside world.

There’s this news story on Times Online about a British man who was put in jail for committing adultery. His girlfriend is married but estranged from her husband. The Briton has escaped from jail and is now out of the country, along with the woman and their daughter.
I do not know how the British guy landed in jail so quickly. I didn’t even know till now that one could go to jail for adultery in the Philippines. If that were really the case, what about all those famous (infamous?) politicians who have admitted to fathering countless children by many …read more
