Pinoy Idol Premieres on GMA7
Philippine Idol only lasted for one season. In its place is the new Pinoy Idol. It is still a franchise of the original American Idol, only it’s now on GMA, instead of ABC. Pinoy Idol premiered on April 5, 2008.
A sneak peek, from an ad aired earlier:
GMA billed the new show as “the first Idol competition in the Philippines”, and as such, will not recognize the Philippine Idol winner Mau Marcelo. The host and judges are also different. We’ll see Raymond Gutierrez hosting, and Ogie Alcasid, Jolina Magdangal and Wyngard Tracy judging. Up for grabs is P1 million, a brand new car, a recording contract with Sony BMG Music Philippines, and a television contract with GMA. Here are some numbers about the show:
3 – months over which auditions were held
8 – cities that hosted auditions. These were Cagayan de Oro, Batangas City, Iloilo City, Cebu City, Davao City, Pasay, Dagupan, and Angeles.
25,000 – number of people who auditioned
8,000 – people who performed in front of the 3 judges
179 – aspiring idols who will go to Manila for further elimination rounds
