Honoring great men and women of science
There is such a prestige attached to the word “scientist”. You probably think of men and women in white lab coats, with binders in hand and looking like Einstein. Well, that is so not true. Not in other countries and certainly not in the Philippines.
Just yesterday, President Arroyo honored the Philippines’ fifty great men and women of science, mostly expertise in the natural sciences, but also some in entrepreneurship, business and crafts. Some of the names are familiar, because I’ve either seen them or met them in UP Los Banos. One of them was my former teacher in Biochemistry (Evelyn Mae Mendoza)! Congrats, Ma’am Mae!
Those I know are passionate about their fields, and they so deserve this honor. They are hardworking, uber-intelligent (but of course) and yet not haughty about being one of the best. They are engaging to talk to, and love to learn from others. Most of them are teachers, so imparting their knowledge comes second nature, but those that are truly great, do not just teach. They inspire. I think that’s one thing that rubbed off on me from Ma’am Mae Mendoza. Yeah, I still love biochemistry, after all these years… or maybe I’m just a nerd too. LOL!
Congratulations on some of the best minds in the Philippines! May you continue to bring inspiration and brainpower into the country.
