The Philippines has 4 in Top 10 Wonders of Nature
Through online voting, the New Seven Wonders Foundation is looking for sites that will eventually become the “New Seven Wonders of Nature“. The purpose of the search is “to create public awareness and contribute to the protection of the world’s natural heritage and foster respect for cultural diversity.”
Anyone can vote for their favorite nature sites until December 31, 2008. When the poll closes, the top 77 will be submitted to a panel of experts who will decide on 21 finalists by January 2009.
The Philippines currently has four sites among the Top 10. These are (numbers in parenthesis show their rank as of today, June 3, 2008):
(3) Tubbataha Reef in the Sulu Sea. The atoll coral reef is a marine sanctuary protected as Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park. More than 1000 marine species, including endangered ones, can be found in the area. Watch this video to know why it is ranked so high:
(4) The Chocolate Hills in Bohol, a group of approximately 1,200 cone-shaped hills spread over more than 50 sq km. Nothing but grass grows on these hills. During the dry season, the grass turns brown, making the hills look like they are mounds of chocolate, thus the name.
(6) The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park near Puerto Princesa in Palawan. The underground river is reputed to be the world’s longest at 8.2 km long. It winds through a cave on its way to the South China Sea.
(10) Mayon Volcano in Legazpi has a almost perfectly symmetrical cone. It is the most active volcano in the country, with 47 recorded eruptions in the past 400 years.

Help to ensure that these sites continue to bring pride to the Philippines, and more importantly, that they are preserved for future generations of Filipinos to enjoy. Vote for them to be included in the New 7 Wonders of Nature. Spread the word!
