Typhoon Fengshen (Local Name: Frank)
The Philippines was hit by a powerful typhoon over the weekend. Typhoon Fengshen (local codename: Frank) unfurled its might, leaving hundreds dead and missing.
Floods occurred all over Manila, Southern Luzon and the Visayas. There were storm surges in coastal areas, and landslides in hillsides and mountains. Iloilo and Capiz were specially hard hit and are expected to be placed under a state of calamity on Monday.

The numbers from the latest reports are:
* sustained winds of 120 km/hr, with gusts of up to 150 km/hr at the height of the storm
* 366,444 people affected
* 70,717 people (more than 35,500 families) evacuated
* 229 dead, 700 missing
* 1 ferry boat sank, carrying 745 passengers and crew
* 32 survivors from ferry boat sinking
Domestic flights were canceled on Sunday, June 22 (Manila time). Classes are canceled on Monday, June 23. Communication has been hampered by telephone lines and cellphone towers that were downed by the strong winds. Electricity and water were cut off in many areas.
