Rumors of July 18, 8.1 Earthquake Persist

Philippine-map-regions-200px

Emails and text messages about a supposed earthquake that’s about to happen in the Philippines have been spreading online and from cellphone to cellphone.

The earthquake “predictions” were supposedly made by a 47-year-old Brazilian teacher, Jucelino Nobrega da Luz (sometimes misspelled Juseleeno Nobulega Daroose). He has allegedly claimed that a massive quake, magnitude 8.1, will hit the Philippines on July 18, 2008. The anonymous email containing this prediction also details supposed past warnings issued by da Luz.

This isn’t the first time that rumors of impending doom have circulated. In May, it was a 6.8 earthquake that was to hit the Philippines. Those rumors came on the heels of the 8.0 earthquake in Sichuan, China.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has debunked that earlier rumor and this current one too. Philvolcs is assuring the entire Philippines that “there is no basic science” behind these reports. In other words, it’s not true!

Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum Jr. advises everyone who receives these text messages or emails to delete them and not to pass them on. Earthquakes are impossible to predict with any accuracy. Yes, they will occur, and yes, they will occur in the Philippines, as they always have. But to say that one of a specific magnitude will occur in any country on a specific date is an absolute delusion.

Still think there might be a grain of truth to it? Kat Carneo, of Kat’s World, has researched this rumor, and found that da Luz did not even make such a prediction. Kat posits that somebody else thought it would be funny to make up the earthquake rumor and spread it around, using the name of an already-controversial modern-day Nostradamus.

i think Earthquake on July 18, 2008 is just a hoax or a false alarm. Philvocs had already said that the event would never happen on that day. :-)

You cannot predict when an earthquake will occur. When did the last time you’d prepared yourself because you know there will be an earthquake in your place? It’s always unpredictable unless you’d feel it right at that moment. Rumors are always RUMORS that has no basis. Well, earthquake is part of a natural disaster and we should think that it’s not the first time we encounter an earthquake. It’s not impossible that Philippines would experience earthquake many times but no one could ever tell when it will exactly might happen. We must look alone to our MAKER who knows and can put an end for everything.

i found mr da luz’ official website and he never made any prediction about the purported july 18 earthquake. He mentioned the philippines twice and that is in reference to the floods and hurricane/typhoon that we will be hit that will give us problems. People circulating this july 18 earthquake rumors are sick!

this man is becoming a sensation in the philippines and maybe in the world wide web. But thinking that way, and if he be a real pro, would he not be in the ‘major’ newspaper and telivisions? In addition I find him mostly in the sites of novice and bloggers, not in the sites of experts in the field.

  11. July 13th, 2008 | 4:55 am

i also predicted that the man who made this prediction will visit the philippines on july 17, 2008 at exactly 3 pm and the next day he will be the first to die in the earthquake

It took me by surprise that such predictions will be circulating around. I am a Filipino by birth and the rumours made me stop and think. What is this world coming to? Do people not have any sense anymore? All I can say is: Pray and live your life to the fullest. Only the ONE above us is all-knowing.

In the science point of view, earthquake do not happen in the rainy season where the rock and soil stick together. Earthquake always happen in the ‘hot season’ where the soils is dry creating crevices under the earth. These spaces created underground can crack thus makes a spiral vibration upward. This is how earthquake happen. The prankster of this prophecy just do not know what season earthquake really happen–predicting it to an unlikely time of the season (rainy days) instead of ’summer’ where it is geologically expected.

    July 16th, 2008 | 11:51 am

What? Earthquakes don’t happen in the rainy season when the rocks and soil stick together?! Earthquakes happen in the hot season when the soil is dry and crevices are formed?! Wow! Maybe the prediction by da Luz is a hoax but this concept takes the cake!! I really do hope that was a prank science concept not because i want an earthquake to happen (pray not) but because i haven’t encountered any such concept in my science classes. Oh but you know I was on the lookout for earthquake clouds a few days ago and rats coming out from the sewers. :-) . He he he. No such happening. The sky is all cloudy because of Helen and the outdoors are just too cold for the rats right now. Now, that’s scientific. He he he.

Truth be told, we are humans and we limited by who we are. Ergo, only God knows when ,where and what and so we pray to God.

honestly things are really unpredictable specially that earthquake but u should not stay calm, its just a saying that we should always be alert after all , all things are possible to happen. global warming is happening, it is too hot and lots of typhoon will going to hit our country. If we really have faith in God then all things are possible. Predictions are not so bad after all or a threat but it is awakening us that we should be alert to what is happening now into our world. Oil price problem, salary problem, population, pollution. What will happen to the world of our next generation? what the earth would bring to us? any suggestion u can make?

All things are possible to happen..even u dont know when u will die. just be prepared and alert.!

I am bitterly disappointed by the way the minds of the Filipinos are predisposed to immediately believing rumors/hoaxes. I hate to admit this but I’m afraid we can easily be the laughing stock of other countries all over the world. Shouldn’t we be focusing more on the crises (food crisis, energy crisis, moral crisis, etc …) our country is at the moment being challenged to tackle with? Let’s not waste our time on these kalokohans ng mga taong walang magawang matino sa buhay! How they rejoice now na marami silang nabola.

Marami lang load ang nagpapakalat nyan. Wala lang magawa sa buhay. There is no history recorded in human kind to determine the exact date of earthquake. It is likely to happen, but when and where it cannot be determined exactly. Pagnagyari na saka pa lang inaanalyze at binibigyan ng kahulugan para kunwari tumama. There is nothing new about it. It is one way para sumikat. Please remember na as of now were experiencing intensity 10 na lindol due sa taas ng pamasahe, taas ng presyo ng bigas, taas ng langis, taas ng meralco, taas ng tuition fee sa school.

Psychic prediction for sure is occultic. Psychics are
usually catholic mystics whose power comes from the enemy.
They get their predictions from mysticism practices- trance,
visions and apparitions by fallen angels masquerading as
    real angels.

  45.   cristino
    June 30th, 2009 | 8:08 pm

Only God knows when an earthquake will happen. No man
can predict an exact date of an earthquake. Do not believe
in psychic prediction by catholic mystics, they are nothing
but part of the occult which is forbidden in the Bible. Those
who practices the occult have great condemnation. The only
source of truth is God’s words in the bible. The bible says
that massive earthquakes will occur in the last days (Matthew
24:24)but no one knows when. There could be signs such as
volcanic activities but the exact date,no one can predict.
