Two More Athletes Fall, Two More Remain in Beijing

We’ve watched the medal hopes of the Philippines fade as one by one, Filipino Olympians fell by the wayside. Of the last four, only two remain as two more failed to advance:

* Maristella Torres (Athletics) didn’t advance beyond the qualifying rounds of the Women’s Long Jump event on August 19, 2008.

* Tshomlee Go (Taekwondo) lost his Men’s 58kg preliminary round to Ryan Carneli of Australia today, August 20, 2008. You can read a detailed account of his bout here.

The remaining two athletes are scheduled for their first Olympic appearances on Friday, August 22, 2008.

* Rexel Ryan Fabriga (Diving) will be competing in the Men’s 10m Platform event preliminary.

* Mary Antoinette Rivero (Taekwondo) will be in the Women’s 67kg preliminaries.

They are the last chance for the Philippines to get a medal at this Olympic Games. If they pull it off, it will end the medal drought that’s dogged the country in the past two Games. Send them your most positive thoughts, people! They’ll need them!

To our 2 remaining athletes – have faith & don’t lose hope! You still have a huge chance at getting a medal. Like I always say to my 6 year old son when playing tennis – focus & you’ll win! He bagged himself 2 medals at a tennis camp :) Whatever the outcome at tomorrow’s game, many congratulations to all of you who have participated in the Olympics!
