The Philippines to Have an Antigraft Academy
I don’t know if I should be proud or ashamed of this news. But an antigraft center will be set up in the Philippines.
The Institute of Ethics, Governance and Law of the Griffith University of Australia is cooperating with the University of the Philippines to establish the Center for Asian Integrity (CAI). The Philippines was picked as the site because of the well-known problem of rampant corruption in the government. It’s shameful that we, of all the countries in Asia, was handpicked as one of the most corrupt. One of the dirtiest of a pile of dirty laundry, to borrow a metaphor from this article at Inquirer.
It is also a reason for pride and hope, on the other hand. This shows that there are Filipinos who are willing to lead the way towards integrity in government. It is time to act. It is time to do something to remove this ugly blot on the Philippines. As you well know, corruption is one of the primary, if not the primary, reason for the country’s economic woes.
So what exactly does the academy hope to accomplish?
Described as a “virtual academy,” the CAI would offer courses and training aimed at reforming a bureaucracy vulnerable to corruption and offer cures to the decaying values of public officials.
I have high hopes that this academy will be the start of the end of corruption in the Philippines.
