Survivor Philippines Episode 36: Bidding Wars

A new week started on Survivor Philippines with only 9 castaways left in the merged Chalam tribe. As you’ll recall, Jace was voted out at the last Tribal Council and became the first member of the Jury. The Jury will become the group of castaways who will choose the Pinoy Sole Survivor.

Incidentally, we have a poll going on to see if you the fans can predict who will be the first Survivor Philippines winner. Don’t forget to cast your vote! As of this writing, there are 100 votes, with 53 of them being cast for one castaway!

Now back to the new episode, Episode 36, which aired on November 3, 2008 in the Philippines.

Cris and Rob were chatting about their reasons for being in the competition. Cris stressed the importance of loyalty, while Rob encouraged Cris to maintain his drive to win, for the sake of his children.

Vern remembered how she had grown close to Jace and how she had felt safe when he was around. Marlon was clear with Rob about how he didn’t care whether the game was played dirty or not. For him, he said, everything was ‘legal’ since it’s part of the game. In his on-camera interview, Marlon said that he was trying to find a weakness among the Naak castaways.

That night, Vern missed Jace, who she was used to sleeping beside in the camp. The next day, Day 22, Vern took time out to write out a message to a loved one.

Hold Your Breath

Before the reward challenge started, Paolo Bediones asked for 3 volunteers. Zita, Kiko and Cris came forward. The castaways would stay underwater as long as they could. For every second they stayed under, they earned an equivalent amount of money, 500 pesos for every second. Cris surfaced almost immediately, due to a problem with his right ear. Zita and Kiko surfaced almost at the same time.

Kaye, JC and Marlon were next. Marlon came up next, followed by Kaye and JC. Among Charisse, Rob and Vern, Rob came up for air first, followed by Charisse and then Vern. The money they earned

Cris – 10 secs (P5,000)
Marlon – 12 secs (P6,000)
Rob – 19 secs (P9,500
Kaye – 30 secs (P15,000)
Charisse – 31 secs (P15,500)
JC – 45 secs (P22,500)
Kiko – 1 min, 17 secs (P38,500)
Zita – 1 min, 19 secs (P39,500)
Vern – 1 min, 36 secs (P48,000)

With their money, the castaways were to bid on items in an auction. The items would sometimes be revealed and sometimes not. The castaways could ask for money from each other, but they could not share the food.

Auction Challenge

The first item was chocolate cake, with a starting bid of P5,000. Zita won it with her bid of P9,500. She took a bite of her win, declared it delicious. The other castaways were left to look on, and turned attention to the other items up for bid.

The next item, which remained covered, was won by Charisse for P8,500. It was revealed to be a clubhouse sandwich with chips. In a twist, Paolo gave Charisse a choice between the sandwich and a scroll. The scroll could contain a reward, a punishment or something that could help the castaway stay longer in the competition. Charisse took the sandwich. Paolo revealed that the scroll would have given her the power to vote twice in the next Tribal Council.

The third item, uncovered, was sold to Vern for P16,000. And it was a… toothbrush and toothpaste, which she could bring back to camp. Paolo gave her a chance to exchange the hygiene items for a mystery object, which turned out to be half of an apple! Vern looked very disappointed at her win.

The fourth item, unrevealed, fueled a bidding war between Rob and Marlon. Rob borrowed money from Vern and Cris to cover his bids. But Vern won it with P25,500. And it was a piece of candy!

The next item, still covered, was won easily by Kiko for a bid of P32,500. Sausage and crackers were under the lid, which he exchanged for a mystery item, which turned out to be tamarind.

In the second round, the first item, which Paolo revealed to be a milk shake, was won by Cris for P5,000. The second item was won by JC for P5,000, an item which Paolo said he could share with the other guys. And it turned out to be underwear.

The next item, leche flan, was won by a teary Kaye for P23,000. The last item was a scroll, with a starting bid for P15,000. JC won it for P40,000. Paolo asked him to read it. The scroll was an invitation for JC and three other castaways to a secret location outside the island. JC picked Zita, Rob and Kiko. They were given shirts, headgear and bags for their night away from camp.

Survivor Philippines Fan Question: How do you think JC’s choices affected the Naak members (Cris and Kaye) who were left behind?
