Survivor Philippines Episode 39 (11-6-08): A Painful Challenge
Survivor Philippines is proving to have many twists and turns! What we once thought was a solid alliance may now be no more. Have the tables been turned on those who once seemed invincible? There was only one castaway who almost deliriously happy at what had been happening.
Episode 39 had a new immunity challenge for the nine remaining castaways. Before that, the four who had left the island were welcomed back. Or were they? Kaye didn’t go to meet them, but instead pretended to be asleep.
Kiko said that he didn’t feel any tension upon his return. He seemed totally oblivious that anything could have happened while they were gone. Kiko showed them the drawings he made of the village.
Kiko told the former Jarakays that he didn’t have any pasalubong (coming back gifts). In fact, Zita had brought something for them, candy and some delicacy, which was given to them in secret by Kiko. Kaye started to eat, but Rob told her not to do so out in the open.
Immunity Challenge
This episode’s immunity challenge was all about endurance. Each castaway had to climb up on 1″-wide wedges of wood in between 2 walls. After 20 minutes, they had to get down and stand on 3/4″-wide pieces of wood, and then 1/2″ after another 20 minutes. The castaway who lasted longest won the immunity necklace.
It was one of the hottest days they had ever had on the island. Marlon seemed in happy spirits, though, and kept on talking. Paolo offered a snack of chips and a cold drink to the first castaway who gave up.
After getting down to the 3/4″ level, Rob ran off to get the snack. Rob laughed at the remaining 8 while he was enjoying his snack. Paolo said that Rob seemed possessed.
Cris Cries Out
Paolo again offered a snack of pasta and a drink, and Marlon got down to get it. This was a painful challenge and Charisse was almost in tears. But she held out for the food that Paolo was going to offer. Before that, Kiko got down. At the 50 minute mark, Charisse gave up and sat down on the ground, crying. Kiko came to get and comfort her, telling her she did well.
JC slipped, 30 seconds before the 1-hour mark. Remaining were Zita, Cris, Kaye and Vern. Around the 1-hour 20 minutes, Zita got down. Paolo brought out some fried chicken and drinks. Marlon urged her to get down, and eventually Kaye did. Cris and Vern toughed it out, for 2 hours, until the sun had almost gone down. Three hours passed, and Vern and Cris were still hanging on. Cris told the others that he could see his father’s face if he lets go. Rob said that he had never seen a girl as strong as Vern. Cris hung on, though he was crying to his father from the pain. It was painful just watching him struggle. Four hours! Then Cris finally got down, in tears. Kiko and Rob came to his side to comfort him.
And superwoman Vern won the immunity necklace.
Survivor Philippines Fan Question: Was JC wrong in choosing Kiko, Rob and Zita to go with him? Should he have kept his enemies closer, as Paolo suggested?
