Survivor Philippines Episode 48 (11-19-08): An Emotional Reward

There wasn’t much that really happened in the previous episode of Survivor Philippines. The castaways spent time around a campfire to relax and just enjoy each other’s company before the next challenge.

In Episode 48, which aired on November 19, 2008, Day 28 dawned on the island of Koh Tarutao. They got their treemail about the upcoming challenge. Rob said it didn’t matter much to him whether he got to read the treemail or not. JC thought their next challenge involved picking partners among the castaways.

Kaye whispered to Rob that JC and Charisse had talked together long into the night, and that JC looked uneasy. Cris had noticed it too and told Kaye to just keep watch. Kaye told him that they were both in danger of being voted off. Cris talked with Marlon and Kaye. Marlon said that JC was very political/strategic in his game and advised Cris to remove the thorn that was blocking his way to becoming the Pinoy Sole Survivor. Cris said that Marlon felt it was his (Marlon) turn to be voted off. Marlon was offering Charisse and himself to be of service to Cris, if ever Cris was having problems with his Naak tribemates. Cris said that Marlon was just trying to get them to fight among themselves. Marlon was once again hard at work at his schemes.

JC said again that he didn’t trust anybody. He suspected that what the others did to Kiko, they could also do to him.

A Numbers Challenge

Before the challenge started, Paolo Bediones told them that they would watch something. He called for a volunteer; Charisse raised her hand, and was the first to watch her family on Paolo’s smart phone. Each castaway received their family and friends’ messages, and no one could hold back the tears.

Paolo said that, in addition to the immunity necklace, the winner of the challenge would be able to watch the rest of the video that they had a glimpse of. Paolo asked them whether it was worth fighting for.

The challenge involved three rounds, which required them to remember details about previous challenges. The first round was a quiz with numbers they had to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Once they got the total, they would open a box, get a bundle with the corresponding number. If they got the correct number, they would get a key that would open a lock to raise a flag. The first three to raise their flags would move on to the second round.

The second round was a rope course that they had to cross. Once they pass it, the three castaways would go to another quiz to raise a flag.

In the last stage, the castaways had to pull 3 bamboo pieces, a wooden plank and 3 buckets of stones over to the finish line. The first one to raise his flag wins immunity.

JC got to the 1st round first. Kaye was the first to get her key. On her way to the 2nd round, she took off her shoes for the rope course. JC was second to raise the flag, followed by Marlon.

JC had overtaken Kaye on the rope course and got to the 2nd quiz first. Paolo told Marlon not to copy JC’s answers. Kaye was once again first to finish the quiz, followed by JC.

JC and Kaye were neck and neck at pulling the loads over to the finish line. Marlon was stuck at the quiz board. Kaye’s stones spilled from her buckets and she had to pick them up. Cris said that Kaye was already tired. JC got his flag up and won immunity. He held his hand out to Kaye, who hugged him.

Rewards Full of Tears

JC watched the full 30-second video of his girlfriend from the Philippines. JC was also allowed to pick 2 more castaways who would watch their own messages. He chose Cris and Marlon. Marlon said that JC probably read his emotions on his face. Everybody was pouring tears, especially Marlon.

On top of all this, JC had another reward! He was given a 5-minute phone call to the Philippines. That undid him, and he could barely talk to his very encouraging girlfriend.
