Survivor Philippines Episode 50 (11-21-08): Surprise at Tribal Council

The last episode of Survivor Philippines showed Marlon seemingly grasping at whatever last chance he could find to survive the coming Tribal Council.

Episode 50 is when we found out whether he succeeded in his efforts.

Kaye and Cris talked by themselves again over their votes. Cris said that the other former Naak members definitely wanted Marlon to leave; Kaye admitted that she was confused. She told Cris to imagine Zita and JC, both strong contenders, remaining on the island. Cris said that the point of it all was to be included in the top 5. They wanted JC and Rob’s alliance to be broken up; one of them should leave. With JC in possession of the immunity necklace, Kaye suggested Rob although Rob seemed to be easy competition. Cris wanted just one from among Zita, Rob and JC to go.

Kaye said Zita had told her that Zita no longer trusted JC because of his alliance with Rob. So Kaye then suggested to remove Charisse and Marlon because she could easily talk to Zita. Cris said that he liked JC and Zita because they work hard in the camp. He was going to make a story that he was wooing Kaye, so that the two of them could have a time to talk by themselves.

Fun and Games

Day 29 at Chalam camp was a rainy day. The castaways played tag like carefree children in the pouring rain. Many of them expressed that it was one of the most fun days of their stay on Koh Tarutao. After their game, Marlon went back to tend their fire, which had almost gone out. Remember that Marlon had planned to put out the fire and hide the flint from the rest of Chalam. Marlon prepared “Jarakay rice”, rice cooked inside bamboo segments.

When the rain cleared, the castaways looked for snails and clams for their meal. Marlon talked to Rob about having a secret weapon, except that he would be a really bad person if he did it. Marlon said that he could change the game in a split second for the remaining castaways, but, as a consequence, he would lose all his friends in Manila.

Zita had taken charge of cooking their meal and had already seasoned the soup. Marlon wanted to cook “Jarakay soup” and took a big ladle full of salt water to add to the pot. But Cris pushed it away, saying it would make the dish too salty.

Cris told Marlon that, if he felt that he was about to leave the island, not to take his revenge through the food. The exchange escalated into an argument between Marlon and Cris. Marlon and Cris accused each other about bad behavior. Marlon said Cris should be happy about Marlon cooking for the entire tribe. Rob stepped in as a peacemaker.

When Marlon had calmed down, he told Charisse where the tribe’s supplies were. Charisse asked him about the flint, and he said everything was there in the trunk. But on-camera, Marlon showed the letter he had written. In it, he said he had hidden the flint and poured water on the fire, and then challenged the others to vote him off.

Charisse said that JC had approached her about joining an alliance with him, Rob and Zita, because of “trust issues with Kaye and Cris”. JC said that if he needed to give his trust to Charisse, he could do it.

Marlon laughingly told Charisse and Kaye about a “nuclear bomb” he was hiding. Charisse got nervous about the Tribal Council, because, after all, she still had the black pearl. Kaye also was nervous about discussions she had observed between Charisse and JC.

Marlon’s Surprise

At the Tribal Council, host Paolo Bediones called the members of the Jury to join them: Jace, Kiko and Vern. Vern, wearing a strapless green cocktail dress, surprised her former tribe mates with a mini fashion show, causing Rob to fall off his seat.

Paolo asked them what they felt at the last two challenges. Cris won the reward challenge and had to choose who among the castaways would pick what food. At the immunity challenge, Marlon was thankful to JC for picking him to watch the message from his girlfriend. Marlon said that whatever he had been in the show was not really who he was, but it was just part of the game.

JC said that he made his decisions because he wanted to be fair. Whether he was voted off, he had shown how he would play the game.

Zita was asked why she was afraid of being voted off. Zita tearfully related the challenges she was facing in the Philippines, the hardships, the sicknesses of her family members, and her desire to give her children an education. But she would accept her fate whatever happened.

Paolo read the letter that Marlon had written about hiding the flint. Marlon then said that, in addition to that letter, he had another fearsome secret, that was for him to know and the others to find out. Shock (and  can I say disgust?) registered on the faces of the other castaways.
