FS Feedback: What is your most memorable Christmas? (and a give-away)

Work & Pleasure Let’s start something new!

"FS Feedback" is a new series at Filipina Soul to give our readers (that’s you) a chance to voice their thoughts on a particular topic or issue. To spearhead this series, I’m giving away a Christmas bonus!

A random drawing will give you a chance to win your choice of a $20 gift card to Amazon or Paypal account, or an equivalent amount in Philippine peso of your choice of Phone cards.

So, our first Filipina Soul Feedback question:

What was your most memorable Christmas celebration?

We love to hear from you!

As to the contest, make sure you read the rules after the cut.

  • Enter your choice in the comments below. You MUST provide an appropriate answer to be eligible for the drawing.
  • You can enter as many times as you want, BUT your comments must not be repeats! I will delete repeated comments.
  • It’s open to residents of the US, Canada and the Philippines only.
  • Contest ends 11:59 midnight EST on December 19, 2008 (Sunday).
  • One (1) winner will be randomly chosen and announced via blog and email the week after.
  • If a winner does not reply within 3 days, he/she forfeits her winnings and an alternate entry will be chosen.
  • REMINDER #1 : In previous contests, I have had several winners forfeited for failure to reply to my emails.  Please make sure your settings don’t put my email into the junk folder, otherwise you’ll have no idea you won. Better yet, please check this blog for the winners’ list after the contest ends. Best bet, come back often and stay a reader!
  • REMINDER #2: Please answer the question above. I will not accept answers like "I want this" or "Thanks".

When I was in the 7th grade, I asked that every gift that I received be in the color purple, which was my favorite color at the time. My relatives came through, and I had so much purple stuff that it looked like Barney had exploded in our livingroom.
If I win, I’d like the Amazon gift card, please.

My most memorable Christmas (other than my 1st one with my husband, which obviously was very special) has to be last year… we added a new member to our family in the form of a son-in-law!

Three years ago we decided that instead of the usual Christmas we would spend Christmas in New York. It was just magical. It was awe inspiring to be at the Rockefeller center and walk down 5th avenue. Even St. Patricks Cathedral. It was busling and just beautiful. We are hoping to do it again soon. If I get to win, I would choose the Amazon card.

My most memorable Christmas was when I had about 25 guests and most were from different places in the world. We had Egyptians, Somalians, Lebanese, Vietnamese, American, Canadian, Scottish……oh we had a grand time! Even though not everyone celebrated Christmas per sayk, it was a splendid day!

The first Christmas after my parents divorce. It was just my mother, my sister and I in a new, smaller home in town — having moved from the country to be closer to Mother’s job. We were not exactly full of good cheer for the coming holiday.

About a week before Christmas we were decorating the living room when one of us chanced to go outside for something. And it was snowing like crazy — a rarity in Alabama. We opened up the curtains so we could watch the snow fall, fixed some hot chocolate and finished decorating with a lot more Christmas spirit than we had felt before the snow began.

The best Christmas memory I have is waking up at my grandparents’ house when I was little and seeing Santa came. You see, I was afraid that he would not know that we spent the night with them and would not know to come there. Well, I woke to find the neatest doll house! Christmas was great that year and my belief if Santa was strong:)

I was 17, almost 18 years old. I had decided that church was for suckers. To repay me, my foster family drove me to the nearest city (where I didn’t know anyone) and simply dropped me off with a backpack.

Christmas was coming, and I was alone.

I managed through on my own until Christmas Eve, sleeping under bridges, in bus stations, on random couches of people who didn’t mind a random teenager crashing there. December 24th rolled around, and the day was bitterly cold. I spent much of the day hiding in a bus terminal, trying to keep warm. I had a pair of gloves, I had a scarf. I had somehow lost my socks, and I remember clearly how cold my toes were in my shoes.

The sky clouded over, and I overheard people saying, “It’s going to be a white Christmas, this year.” Afraid for my sockless feet, I asked around and found out where the nearest youth shelter was. I headed there on foot, and arrived right around dinner time.

They let me in with a smile. They served me a good, hot meal. They had a Christmas tree, and a small stereo playing cheerful carols that could barely be heard over the sound of too many noisy, well fed street kids. And when I asked to be allowed to sleep there tonight, they had a bed available. I was safe, for the night.

I woke up in the morning and glanced out the window; it had snowed, and it had snowed a lot. My childhood delight of a white Christmas had been obliterated by my fear of being too cold for too long. I could smell hot cider coming from the kitchen. I got up, put my shoes back onto bare feet, and went out to greet the day.

To my surprise, there were presents under the tree that morning! Stockings thumbtacked to the walls! A breakfast of pancakes and eggs and bacon, hot cider, hot chocolate, and coffee! I nearly broke down and cried from joy.

I ate my fill. The staff at the shelter allowed all of us homeless, family-less kids to open presents and pick a stocking from the wall. I got candy, trail mix, a bottle of water. I got ponytail ties and a couple barrettes for my hair. I was gifted with scented lotion and a stick of deodorant and, miraculously, two new pairs of socks. Then the impractical gifts appeared; a hair dryer, and a large stuffed bunny that looked like it should have arrived on Easter, not Christmas.

I thanked the people at the shelter and made off with my gifts into the snow, clean socks on my feet and a smile on my face. The hair dryer was bartered away that day for another hot meal, but for some reason, I kept the bunny. Eight Christmases later, the big yellow bunny still greets me on Christmas morning to remind me that there are good people in the world, and to never ever take anything for granted.

My most memorable Christmas would be the year when I turned 18. I was not expecting anything for Christmas that year, as my parents didn’t have a lot of money, and I had 2 younger brothers they needed to buy for. So I had prepared myself to get up that morning to nothing, you know no gifts for me. But, to my surprise my parents had saved to get me a new leather jacket, which had been on my Christmas list for 2 years. It was the best Christmas, because of the surprise gift.

We don’t have much money this year to spend on presents but this is his two year Christmas – and the one he will start remembering and the one I think will be the first one he can start to appreciate so this Christmas may just be my best one.

So, because everyone was together and I wouldn’t get that to happen again, I planned my wedding in two weeks. My husband and I were married the day after Christmas and it was beautiful. Last year I had a good experience with my Girl Scout troop as we enjoyed learning how other countries celebrated Christmas. We had a little Christmas fair.

My most memorable xmas has to be 40 yrs ago when I was 7 when my dad was sick and out of work and money was tight. So my mom said that we would all give each other something from the heart and by hand. You think as kids we would think something like this would suck but we knew how hard our folks tried to make ends meet so we tried not to give them any trouble. We all has a great time making our homemade gifts with paint and glitter and the gifts from the heart was time promised to each other to do extra chores. It turned ot to be a fun Christmas after all so much so that to this day we still gift each other promises of the heart.

My most memorable Christmas was from when I was a child. We would go skidooing on Christmas eve and then come home and have hot chocolate and eggnog. Christmas day we would open our presents and our cousins would come over and we would play all day and also do some more skidooing!
