Survivor Philippines Episode 57 (12-2-08): A Tearful Farewell
In the last episode of Survivor Philippines, Cris won the Immunity Necklace in a four-hour test of endurance. Episode 57, which aired on December 2, 2008, is where we found out who was going to leave.
That night, the castaways were awakened to go to Tribal Council. It was a surprise and they did not get a chance to talk among themselves about who they would vote out.
Host Paolo Bediones asked Cris about why he threw the black pearl out into the ocean. Cris said that he didn’t want anybody else to suffer. He was lucky because he had won immunity, which nullified the two votes he would have received from the black pearl.
Paolo told the castaways that he would talk to each one in turn, with only the Jury listening. He started with Zita, and the four other castaways left the Tribal Council area.
Questions and Answers
Paolo asked Zita if it was now clear to her who she could have an alliance with. Zita said that it’s better just to trust yourself. She recalled that when Naak was still strong, she just followed what the others wanted by way of voting (Kiko was shown smiling at this statement). But now that there are only 5, no one suggested to her who to vote off.
Paolo asked her if she was ready if ever she was the one voted off that night. Zita said yes, but that she also still wanted to compete in order to help her family and give them at least 3 meals (of rice) per day.
Cris was next. Paolo told him that, because of the Immunity Necklace, Cris was assured of reaching the final 4. He asked what strategy would Cris use to be in the final 3 and final 2. Cris said that he would do the same things he had done so far. He would still be thankful for however far he makes it.
Paolo reminded Charisse that she was the only Jarakay left in the game. He asked if she thought it was possible for her to voted out by the others who wanted Naak to be the final 4. Charisse said that she knows her capabilities, but she didn’t think she was more of a threat compared to the some of the others.
Rob was asked if, there came a point that he needed to betray someone to win the P3 million, would he be able to do it (Kiko was shown rubbing his temples as if he had a headache just thinking about this possibility). Rob seemed to take his time answering this question. He then said that it probably depended on the situation. But he would like to think that putting values first would be foremost. He said that, out of the five remaining, he was the only one who never won the Immunity Necklace. He believed that the game was a test of both physical and mental ability.
JC was last to be interviewed by Paolo. Paolo said that what JC did in the last immunity challenge was risky. He reminded JC of what he said at the previous Tribal Council, that if he didn’t have the Immunity Necklace, he would be next to leave. JC said that he knew he could last longer, but Cris was gesturing to him to ’save’ him. JC was the only one who could do it. Paolo said that, though he didn’t trust Cris and he didn’t know whether Cris would be make good on his promise, he was willing to give him the most precious thing in the game. JC said that he took the risk and just prayed for the right decision, and that if it was wrong, he had no regrets.
Paolo asked him what he and Rob were signaling back and forth. JC said that Rob told him he needed to win the necklace because Cris and Zita would vote for him. Paolo asked him which he would remove: the threat or one who was not deserving to be in the final 5. JC said that he would remove the threat, because he had made a promise. If he made it to the end, he wanted to show everyone that a promise (and keeping it) could carry him to the very end.
Paolo asked him how he viewed the others. JC said that he had so much trust in Rob, and that Cris seemed confused. He could also Charisse; Zita was good in challenges and camp life but he could not fully trust her because she had a tendency to go back and forth on her votes.
Farewell
Voting began. Five castaways, four names possible.
Zita voted for JC, saying she only wanted him to be with his girlfriend again. Cris voted for Rob, saying Rob was too close to JC, and Rob needed to go.
One vote for JC. One vote for Zita. One vote for Rob. Another vote for Zita.
And the 14th castaway to leave the island was Zita.
Paolo’s voice seemed to break when he said “Nagsalita na ang tribo. Paalam, Nanay”.
In her farewell speech, a tearful Zita said that in the game of Survivor, the mind, not the heart, should be used. Zita had asked before that, if she was the one to be voted out, that they would tell her first, but they didn’t. She said that really needed the money and she would have used the prize money for so many things. She then left a message for the Rob, Charisse and JC – the three who voted for her – that she didn’t think they could do this to her. She said she could not get revenge but others will get back at them.
At camp, Cris pondered the next immunity challenge, that he needed to win by his own ability, and not by asking help from others. JC said that JC wasn’t talking to them, because he knew he would be next, if he didn’t win immunity.
JC had to learn how to cook rice. Rob said that it was sad that Zita had left, but it forced them to learn to look after themselves in the camp.
Survivor Philippines Fan Discussion: This was by far the most emotional Tribal Council for me. I didn’t realize how much I was hoping for Nanay Zita to win, until she left. She was probably too much of a threat for JC, Rob and Charisse to let her stay. How do you feel about Zita’s departure?
