Survivor Philippines Episode 58 (12-3-08): The Fire and Water Challenge

After an emotional farewell by Zita from Survivor Philippines, the rest of the Chalam tribe go into a new reward challenge.

Host Paolo Bediones described the challenge as a physical test that would also require them to show their knowledge of island life.

The first part of the challenge had a rope course that the castaways had to cross using two wooden planks. Next was fire and water see-saw station. On one end was a can where they had to make a fire. On the other end was another can which they had to fill with water to raise the can with the fire and light a wick. The first one to light the wick wins a massage (and food) at a spa in Krabi, Thailand. Paolo said that the time away would help greatly in the next immunity challenge.

Fire and Water

JC was first at the rope course. Rob fell, and had to go back to the beginning, removing his shoes in the process. Charisse also took off her shoes. JC was leading and was first to finish the rope course. He ran quickly to the fire-making station. Rob and Cris finished the rope course at the same time, with Charisse close behind.

JC had finished filling his can with water, and the fire can went up. But the fire he made was not big enough and was over to one side. He had already used up a lot of his wood. The fire can went down, just as the other castaways were starting on their own fires. Charisse found the challenge difficult since she only knew how to make fire from embers.

Rob made a huge fire, which started to go up to the wick. But the wick went off to the side and didn’t light up. JC worked hard to catch up with him. Cris got his fire up too but it eventually died out. The fire cans went up and down several times. Charisse also caught up with filling her water can. But Rob got his wick to light up and won the reward challenge.

Paolo said that, similar to the other reward challenges, Rob could bring another castaway with him to enjoy the massage, good food and a good night’s sleep. Rob said, “kung saan ako may malaking pagkakautang (to whom I have a great debt)… JC”. Charisse said that, no matter who won, JC or Rob, they would pick each other.

On the boat to Krabi, Rob said that, obviously, he would pick JC, because JC had always picked him in the rewards that he (JC) had won.

Spa Break

Back at the camp, Charisse and Cris went to work on preparing their food. Charisse told Cris that if he won immunity, she would vote for Rob. Cris agreed that Rob was their target. Cris didn’t like that Rob said that he used his mind, but Cris thought Rob was just riding on his alliance with JC. Cris and Charisse both said that they preferred JC to reach the finals over Rob.

JC and Rob enjoyed fine dining at the Thai resort, complete with wine. JC said that it’s been a long time that they had used knives and forks so that it took time to get used to it. With their wine glasses clinking, Rob thanked JC for everything.

At the spa, JC said that he was thankful to Rob for letting him experience it with him. JC fell asleep at the massage table.

Charisse and Cris continued to discuss their chances of making it to the final two. They both could see that their chances to make it to the final two were nil with Rob still around. They also discussed Nanay Zita’s departure from the island.
