Survivor Philippines Episode 61 (12-8-08): Friends Hang Tight

Last week on Survivor Philippines, we saw Cris voted off, leaving the Final Three – JC, Rob and Charisse – on the island of Koh Tarutao.

Day 38 brought the final Immunity Challenge. The winner of this challenge will be sure to be one of the Final Two and will choose the other castaway to go with him/her. Host Paolo Bediones welcomed the three to the site of the castaways’ original landing on the island.

The challenge was simple but difficult. Each of them would lie down on an angled platform and hold on to a wooden handle. Every 15 minutes, the angle of the platform would be increased. Water trickling down the platform would make the challenge harder.

Paolo observed that Charisse was emotional. Charisse replied tearfully, “I want it so badly”. Paolo reminder her that she made it to the Final Three and she had nothing left to prove.

A Slippery Slope

With the bright sun bearing down on them, the three remaining castaways began their challenge. After 15 minutes, Paolo increased the angle of the platforms, and then again after another 15 minutes. The platforms were now at a 45 degree angle. Charisse started to struggle to keep herself on the platform, until she she was hanging just by her fingers at the last level. That was when the water started to flow. JC also struggled, while Rob seemed comfortable enough.

Charisse whispered, “I can’t, sorry… I’m letting go”, and slid down to the sand. Paolo moved to assist her, and told her to have a seat. Rob called out to her, “love you, Cha”, and JC followed suit. After lasting 47 minutes, Charisse sat down crying on the ground.

JC and Rob used a variety of moves to keep themselves from falling, until they had their feet flat on the platform. Charisse had recovered her cheerfulness, and reminded the two guys that they had a good breakfast. JC joked that Charisse ate a lot that morning and became heavier, that’s why she fell.

JC told Rob that he’s nearing his limit and slipped, nearly falling. He was clearly struggling to hold on. Charisse called out her encouragement to the two. Rob’s strength was starting to show. JC told him, “Bro, hindi na kaya”. They shook hands before JC fell to the ground. They were on the platform for 1 hour.

And Rob had won immunity!

Paolo reminded Rob that he had a difficult decision to make. On camera, JC said that he was happy for Rob, because Rob had wanted to win a challenge for so long, and that at least, he had given Rob a good fight.

A Celebration on the Beach

Back at camp, the remaining three had a bonding moment on the beach as the sun began to set. JC was happy that he was able to fulfill his promise to Charisse.

The three ran toward the ocean to bathe on their last sunset on the island of Koh Tarutao. JC said that they had kept their promises to each other that’s why they reached the end.

Charisse shouted and spun around in the beach in joy. She said that it was such a wonderful feeling to know that they had gone through the challenge and now it was nearing its end. “Best experience ever!”

Rob said that they thanked one another, wished each other good luck and promised that they would keep the friendships they formed on the island once they went home to the Philippines.

As Rob laughed, Charisse kept shouting, “Survivor ako! Survivor ako! …. Akala niyo hanggang day 3 lang ako! 38! 38 days! Mga insekto, talo ko kayo! Talo ko kayo!”

Even until night, Charisse kept up the hollering, “Survivor ako! Hindi ako maarte!”.

They talked about the alliances they formed to get to the final three. The theme of their conversation was trust and keeping promises. JC said that he didn’t expect that those he trusted would be the ones with him in the end. Rob said, “More than the prize, more than the 3 million whatsoever. The best prize I received ever, the best ever prize is you guys, all of you. 18 of you guys, and most specially sa mga naiwan. The cash prize dito, bonus na lang ito, eh. Ang pera, mauubos at mauubos. Pero yung kaibigan mo ditong na-me-meet mo, yun ang….” And he shook his head in wonder.

Rob then returned to his comedic side, holding up his black briefs, “At sino’ng mag-aakala na ang brief na ito ay magtatagal ng 39 days? Ano’ng klaseng brief ito? Umabot siya ng 38 days. At aabot siya bukas nang 39 days.”

That evening, Paolo welcomed the three into Chalam’s 8th Tribal Council, and called in the Jury – Jace, Kiko, Vern, Marlon, Kaye, Nanay Zita and Cris.
