6 Filipino High Schoolers win international Science Fair

by Grace on May 26th, 2007

kidscientistDid your hgh school ever have those annual science fairs where you’re forced to think of an experiment, make poster boards and strut your research for all to see? My high school was big on that. But for the love of my profession, I can not remember what I did for my science fair project! Which probably tells me how simple/poor it was.

So I was superbly impressed with this group of Filipino students who went on to win awards at the world’s largest pre-college science competition.

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), held Albuquerque, New Mexico, from May 14 to 19 showcases cutting edge-science every year. The research of these pinoy teenagers are worth mentioning. So impressed in fact were everyone that one German institute even offered to buy rights to one of the research. Oooh.

Here are the young scientists and their accomplishments:

Melvyn Carlo Barroa, 16, won a Fourth Grand Award in the microbiology category for his study that explored the potential of fish mucus as antibiotic.

Hester Mana Umayam, 16, for her part, also bagged a Fourth Grand Award in the behavioral and social sciences for her research that delved into Kalinga natives’ use of mathematics in their woven fabrics.

The team of Ivy Razel Ventura, Janine Cindy Santiago and Mara Elaine Villaverde, all 16, also won a Fourth Award in Team Projects for their study that explored the potential of Nudibranchs, or sea slugs, in tumor research.

Barroa and Umayam, and the team each received a $500 prize.

Luiji John Karlo Suarez, 17, won a scholarship award from the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance-The Lemelson Foundation for his study of the potential of a type of bacteria in controlling pests in plants.

Read the full article at Asian Journal to find out where their ideas came from (you’ll be amazed!) and to know if maybe they’re of your alma mater (you’ll be surprised what high school they hailed from).
