A Filipino-American Thanksgiving Dinner

by Grace on November 20th, 2007

What are you havin’ for dinner?

It’s Thanksgiving Day in two days and by now, most families in the USA would be cooking for one of the most celerated and family-centric holidays in North America.

What’s gonna be on your table? In most homes, the large gastronomic fare will center around the TURKEY. Floating around the house will be the aroma of traditional side dishes that most Americans would say complete the meal.

Stuffing for the turkey, with either cranberry sauce and/or gravy. Mashed potatoes, green bean casseroles, peas and carrots, bread rolls or biscuits, a Waldorf salad and of course a variety of pies - apple, pumpkin, and sweet potato for dessert.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with having these traditional American dishes, but if you want to add a Filipino flavor to your celebration, try this alternative menu.

How about…

Lechon Manok instead of turkey, and there is no need for stuffing.

lechon manok

Complementing that, Mang Tomas lechon sauce instead of gravy. Plain steamed green beans or sitao, or steamed kangkong with soy sauce and kalamansi to dip on the side. Atcharang papaya to get your taste buds working. Hot steamed white rice to complete the meal.

And later, for dessert, buko pie, bibingka or sinukmani.

YUMMY… Feeling pinoy!

Well, whatever your menu is, may your celebration of Thanksgiving be full of peace, gratefulness and abundance.

I have a question. ;-) Does buko pie (famous in the Philippines) originated from apple pie, or is buko pie an indigenized version of apple pie which came from americans? where can i find the proof that it really originated from applepie? thanks a lot….
