A teenager’s take on the Philippine elections

by Grace on February 25th, 2007

I read her post and I was quite impressed. Seriously, politicians should listen to the youth more.

Anna Owe posted “filipino and proud(! or ?)” -

Here’s what I grew up believing: there is a difference between a politician and a public servant. A politician’s main concern is getting into power and more power. I think it was Uli who said that the Senate was just 24 people waiting to be president. A public servant puts his people’s interest first. No corrupting, no empty promises. Just… service.

I will echo her suggestions for a better country… if only a serious politician public servant will listen…

1) a CLEAN, efficient public transportation system. We ought to develop something like the subway system or the Bart. It will lessen the traffic for sure because people will be encouraged to take that instead of driving around. Less cars on the road = less roadkill, less pollution.

2) Emphasis on education. Public school teachers should get paid more. Imagine teaching in a school for 15 years and getting paid about 12k a month. And that’s someone with an MA and Ph.D.

3) Focus on the arts. Filipinos are naturally gifted in performing arts. And we were once touted as the “Latinos of Asia” in terms of dance. That’s why I’m so angry about the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra being disbanded because San Miguel chose to focus their funds on the four basketball teams they own.

4) Population control. Contraceptives and sex education should be encouraged. Population distribution. Most of our problems are born from this. Too many people = too much waste.

5) The environment of the Philippine shows SO much potential. My dad wrote in his book something like, “When God gave away natural beauty, the Philippines must have been in the front row.” We gotta work on it now before it disappears for good.

6) Too many laws already. We don’t need anymore. We don’t need a Senate AND Congress. What’s more important is the implementation of it. What’s the point of the laws if they’re not getting implemented?

If YOU were to advice our public servants, what would you tell them? How can they be of true public service?

Mabuhay kayo!!
