After the storm
I belated learned of typhoon Milenyo last night, and Maricar posted here how bad the storm hit Metro Manila and other provinces in Luzon. Center gusts of the storm were up to 150 kph (93 mph) but it was travelling slowly at 17 kph (10.5 mph).
We called (and texted) our parents in Laguna and a brother in Negros Occidental but couldn’t get hold of them until 11 p.m. last night (US; EST). They texted that there were fine, but we wonder what damage the storm caused our parents’ house.
What about your family? How did they fare? We hope that they’re safe now. We can always repair our damaged houses (Filipinos are very capable of rising from catastrophes like these) but still we pray that none of your families were hurt.
According to ManilaTimes.net, a landslide in Bagong Silang, Calamba Laguna killed 14 people. A section of a slope of Mount Makiling had collapsed. The Office of Civil Defense reported at least 48 people dead, maybe more as there are unconfirmed reports of another 5 dead on the east side of Makiling.
According to INQ7.Net, many areas around Manila still remain underwater. An irrigation dike in General Trias collapsed and washed away houses. At least 30 people who have been watching the dam were reported missing, and only one body has so far been found.
Trees were uprooted and power lines went down in the storm’s fury. Today, via INQ7.Net we learned that Meralco may have power up in some places by Friday, but other areas will have to wait awhile.
No one was spared, not the rich or poor.
INQ7.Net quotes a resident of Taguig, one of the poorer suburbs in Metro Manila:
“I was in my front room of my house when the typhoon hit.The wind was so loud and the rain so heavy that it sounded like bricks falling on the roof. The tin roof on the back of the house was ripped off by the wind and disappeared.”
And from an anonymous Forbes Park resident:
“This is the worst I have seen it. Manila has been hit before by typhoons but not like this. Some areas around here look like they have been bombed.”

Glad to hear that your family here in the Philippines are fine. I also think Milenyo is indeed one of the worst storms to hit the country yet.

This is also the worst typhoon I ever saw in my life!

My mom-in-law just phoned us telling that our house in Bay (town next to LB, and near jubileeville subd.) suffered a few damages on the roof. A few barangay roads have been submerged in water, and no power until now, even celfone signals were down for days.
As in the past, the typhoon has lost us many lives, and caused property damages. Let us all hope and pray that those affected be given the strength, comfort and assistance they need in this time of distress.

gina, hopefully everyone’s ok in Bay.
it’s been more than a few days after and we’re just getting news of more damages that te typoon did. one of our friends’ homes got flooded and my university town in UPLB had a lot of broken trees but hopefully no one was hurt.

At least UPLB is now getting back to normal, even slowly. Still a lot of cleaning up to do, though. More fundraising needed as well to help out surrounding communities flooded and struck by landslides. On a good note, the students are leading the way on helping out the communities.
