Andres Bonifacio, master of communications
I’ve always been partial to Andres Bonifacio… yeah, over Rizal or even Aguinaldo.
He was a true hero. He stood up to injustice, and fought with hell and fury for our freedom. It’s no question he is the Father of Philippine Revolution. But he wasn’t just all brawn too. Even without any formal education, he was well-learned.
Bonifacio Day is of course celebrated November 30th, which I missed to mention in this blog. So it was cool to find this tribute to Andres Bonifacio’s gift of communication a few days later, and to find out some cool facts about the revolutionary.
Bonifacio knew 3 languages - Spanish, English and Filipino and he read voraciously! Look at his reading list - Lives of the Presidents of the United States”; “History of the French Revolution” (two volumes); “Les Miserables” by Victor Hugo”; The Wandering Jew” by Eugene Sue among others.
To keep the Katipunan highly efficient and yet a true underground movement, Bonifacio employed a “triangle” system. In contemporary times, the “triangle” took on many permutations including cell structures for activists, and multi-level marketing as product distribution channels. The “triangle” was system of enlistment wherein a recruiter would ask only two members to join. Only the recruiter would know the names of both recruits while the recruits would not each other. Thus, the organization is encapsulated into three-man units and a direct command chain resulting to a very efficient personnel management.
The revolutionary also used symbols, communication models, and strategic planning to organize the poor, the uneducated, the masses and together, fought for freedom from Spanish oppression.
Unfortunately, Andres Bonifacio was betrayed by someone from the inside, one of whom he trusted.
