Applauding the city government of Mandaluyong
One of my recent discoveries about education in the Philippines is the sheer number of teachers specializing in special education, which tells me that we have a growing number of Filipino children being found to have special needs and learning disabilities.
Kids with special needs are a challenge to teach and especially harder to diagnose if the family is poor. Usually children such as these are just being passed as “bobo“, of low IQ, and hardly are they given attention in a regular public school. Those with physical disabilities may have it just a tad easier if there are existing programs available for them.
So it’s a good thing there is now a pilot program called Project TEACH. Spearheaded by the Mandaluyong City government, this program - the first in the nation - is created to give these children hope of a better future.
Project TEACH for “Therapy, Education and Assimilation of Children with Handicap” will identify, diagonose and provide therapy at an early age for poor children with physical and learning disabilities.
Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur Abalos signed a memorandum that in part read -
“The City of Mandaluyong recognizes the need of children with disabilities to be provided with quality therapy, educational and rehabilitation services to prevent the occurrence of additional disabilities and to further enhance present abilities necessary for independent living.”
I applaud Mayor Abalos and this city government for this noble task of reaching out to a class of the most underprivilege youth who need our help to become useful members of the Philippine society.
