Bill to Give Full Benefits to Filipino Veterans
More good news is in store for Filipino veterans of World War II. In addition to the reunification bill pushed by U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka, the Filipino Veterans Equity Act of 2007, if passed, will increase pension benefits for veterans.
Although more than 200,000 Filipinos fought in the U.S. military during World War II, the foreign-born soldiers were denied full veterans’ benefits by a law passed a few months after the Japanese surrender.
Today, the surviving vets and their kin are still pushing for equitable treatment by a government that conscripted them and occupied their country for most of the first half of the 20th century.
A recent House bill could finally make amends for the 61-year oversight. Backed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and state Sen. Leland Yee, the Filipino Veterans Equity Act of 2007 would reverse the Rescission Act of 1946, which left so many fighters with so few rewards.
