Flooding is not unusual in the Philippines. From the streets of Manila to the country fields, it’s not uncommon to wade in knee-deep water to get to where you’re going.
But have you seen rice that actually grows with the floods? Check this out – researchers from my old employment – the International Rice Research Institute at Los Banos – are inspecting some varieties of rice. Well, if that’s NOT interesting enough, perhaps the person outside the boat, who has to swim to make sure his rice field is doing well.

There is such a prestige attached to the word “scientist”. You probably think of men and women in white lab coats, with binders in hand and looking like Einstein. Well, that is so not true. Not in other countries and certainly not in the Philippines.
Just yesterday, President Arroyo honored the Philippines’ fifty great men and women of science, mostly expertise in the natural sciences, but also some in entrepreneurship, business and crafts. I sort of got alerted to Julius Rocas’ blog when I asked him about a carnival for Filipino blogs. So when he replied I took the time to check out his website – The Four Eyed Journal.
