Celebrating the "Week of Filipino Costumes"

by Grace on September 10th, 2008

Manila Bulletin blurbed this week as the “Linggo ng Kasuotang Pilipino” (Week of Filipino Costumes) in celebration of our diverse culture and national history as shown through native wear.

I did a little research about our indigenous costumes and found some cool info and trivia that I want to share:

  1. All Filipino costumes have these in common: (a) colorful; (b) loose-fitting.
  2. Costumes of the mountain tribe are handwoven, with colorful stripes of designs. A man’s influence in the community is known by the number of stripes on his costume.
  3. Muslim costumes weave metallic threads into the cloth, and women adorn themselves with jewelry.
  4. Christian Filipino costumes circa 1900s take on a Spanish influence, but only the Maguinoo or noble class wore multi-colored decorated dresses. The rest wore something similar to Andres Bonifacio’s fashion.
  5. The Maria Clara is a class in itself.

Here are some pictures of Filipino costumes worn by Christians in the 1900s.

Now I’m not a Barbie fan, but if there were Barbie dolls that I’ll buy, these had to be the Ethnic Filipino Barbie collection.
