Coconut vodka (95% proof) / "Lambanog with guava juice" and other ‘Loco over Coco’ entrees (entries)

Loco Over Coco? The Filipinos are!

Last month we wrote several articles on The Tree of Life - the coconut, with its variety of uses - from food to building materials to containers and stuff.

lambanog008_small Kai at Bucaio (which is made from sweetened coconut) appropriately rounded up the posts. (update - Maricar did post about this today as well…)

Food recipes using coconut were the main thing, but what caught my eyes was the drink - “lambanog with guava juice“.

Lambanog” is fermented coconut flower sap. It’s a potent alcoholic drink (95% proof), mind you. Though I’m too scared to taste lambanog, those who dared to do so tell vodka is like water after this.

So anyone dared to try Coconut Vodka (a.k.a lambanog)? Let us know what you think!

Grace, you definitely should try lambanog. I think it’s an acquired taste straight up. But if you make a nice cocktail out of it you’re going to be pleasantly surprised at how good it it.

I don’t think I’ve tasted Lambanog yet either. I would love to taste coconut vodka!

    Mabuhay ang lambanog! hahaha

It really is a great base for cocktails. You’ll never be a true Filipino if you haven’t tasted one.

I’m still recovering from drinking it last night. My friends daughter is visiting the US from the Philippians and she brought some Lambanog. I didnt think the taste was strong, smooth actually. I got really hammered on it, still buzzed this morning. I gotta find where I can get this in the US. Cheers!

You can find lambanog of different quality levels, varying from delicious to disgusting. Branded bottles offer a quality guarantee, but I ensure you that some unlabeled bottles sold on the roadside are also superior!
